Academics versus Pharma

More and more biomedical research is performed by pharmaceutical companies, and more and more academic results are followed up by spin-off companies or in collaboration with pharma companies. Yet, for instance with hiring, both academia and pharma seem to believe there is still an "Iron curtain" in between. - Is this true? - Is this desirable, and if not, what could we do to tear down the wall?

Big pharma can fund the research and benefit the most vs academics. But the rare disease side suffers because they are only researching what they can profit from.

Difficult question to give a simple answer. The researcher has to determine what is best for themselves and their family and what drives them to be successful as everyone's situation is different. Go with your gut.

Genuine collaboration with and good intentions for the source of the know-how or knowledge (academia) may be lacking. It is easier and better to buy an IP from an academia than attempt other ways. It is usually disastrous when it backfires.
More IPs may come from same academia if absorbed by the company.

Well, it is not exactly desirable. One way to combat issues like this is to continuously support the culture of interdisciplinary research so there will be an avenue to gain insights to relevant skillset that may be required of you during an interview.

It will be great if biomedical research would be conducted by both academia and the Pharmaceutical giants that in itself will reduce the risk of biases since "most Pharma giants seem to go for product promotion". The collaboration should be encouraged because it'll mean well for research.

Well, the scientific development and its application for the mankind needs to go hand in hand. The theoretical findings by the academicians needs to be proved by the prototype and eventually by the working model where the role of companies comes into picture. Therefore, close collaborative work between the two looks to be the viable model without any iron curtain between them.

Academics and Pharma both are interrelated. No doubt Pharma is the backbone for all the research activities, innovations, creativities, Research and Developments at the same time academics are concerned with buiding blocks or creation for pharma graduates, Post graduates, Doctorates to the Healthcare Fraternity.
