How do you increase the visibility of a published article?

What are some methods which you as a scientific author have used to increase awareness of your published research?

Some examples:
  • Cite the paper whenever appropriate
  • Bring reprints to conferences
  • Utilize social media (how?)
  • Send a press release through your university
What are your tricks and secrets to generating more awareness of your articles?

I have mentioned over 30 different approaches to “increase the visibility of a published article” in my article entitled “Effective Strategies for Increasing Citation Frequency” Available at SSRN: https://ssrn.com/abstract=2344585

1. Use a unique name consistently throughout academic careers;
2. Use a standardized institutional affiliation and address;
3. Repeat key phrases in the abstract while writing naturally;
4. Assign keyword terms to the manuscript;
5. Use more references;
6. Write a longer paper;
7. Write a review paper;
8. Present a working paper;
9. Publish with international authors;
10. Publish papers with a Nobel laureates;
11. Publish your article in one of the journals everyone in your discipline reads
12. Open Access (OA) has a positive impact on growth of citations;
13. Publish your work in a journal with the highest number of indexing
14. Self-archive articles
15. Keep your professional web pages and published lists up to date
16. Make your research easy to find, especially for online searchers
17. Deposit paper in Open Access repository
18. Contribute to Wikipedia
19. Start blogging
20. Publishing in an open access journal
21. Constantly update online research networks like ORCID, LinkedIn, Pubfacts, google scholar
22. Join academic social networking sites
23. Link your latest published article to your email signature
24. Create a podcast describing the research project and submit the podcast to YouTube or Vimeo
25. Make an online CV.Publish it in a known and high quality journal
26. Bring reprints to conferences
27. Shared the publish research on your institutes website
28. Sharing the abstracts in scientific groups or academic groups
29. Share links of the published research in social media like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook
30. Upload published open access articles on ResearchGate and Academia.edu
31. Ensuring multidisciplinary, multicenter and multiregional collaboration

I do these 12 things to increase the visibility of my publications:

1. Publish in Open Access journals. My papers can be easily and freely shared that way.
2. Focus on generating papers that are well written. If a reader has to work hard to slog through a paper, how likely are they to cite it?
3. Cite my papers in newer publications, when relevant, of course!
4. Add my papers to my ORCiD profile and periodically update/review other online research-related profiles, as well (there are many).
5. Tweet a link to my publication that includes a succinct summary/relevance of the paper and heartfelt gratitude to my collaborators/contributors.
6. Add citation information for the publication to relevant project websites, such as GitHub. For example, the Evidence and Conclusion Ontology (ECO) GitHub site says "If you use ECO in your work, please consider citing ECO. We appreciate the attribution. Please cite our most recent paper, PMID 30407590..."
7. Use figures/data from my publications in my professional presentations, clearly displaying the PMID/citation.
8. Use my papers in various teaching opportunities, e.g. workshops, journal clubs, or classroom.
9. Announce my papers in university research briefs.
10. For significant papers, issue a press release through the university.
11. Work and publish collaboratively. If you are connected to other researchers/institutes you gain some benefit from their outreach efforts, too.
12. Publish in appropriate journals. This last point is subjective. Sure its good to publish in high-impact journals- but it's also important to reach the right readership, so you might fare better to publish in some topical or community-specific journal that reaches the right readers (and potentially future citers of your article).

I develop and announced the heart disease and stroke prevention course and program at the university. Invited scientist at NIH to speak about specific health disparities (diabetes, cancer, HIV, mental health, health disparities, obesity, hypertension, stroke and heart disease) at the University. Develop annual conferences for the community, faculty, staff and students at the university about health disparities in the community. Collaborated with another university and social organization to fund the project. The students and I also went to various venues (college dorms, community organizations, churches, group homes)in the community to educate the community on specific health disparities . Students develop culturally sensitive power point presentations to present in the community every semester. Developing a Community-Based Stroke Prevention Intervention in the Community: The DC Angels Project. The next year I develop the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention in the Community Course at the University.

Generally I use my pdf file as introduction of my work for discussion and show one example which I recently did. I was able to discuss very fruitfully in spite of my poor English .
============================
Dear Dr. X,
Ii is my great pleasure to have an opportunity to discuss your excellent paper published in XXXX 2016, XXXXXX.
I am very interested in the paper from the view point of “off-targets” in the antibody recognition in disordered proteins.
First of all I want to ask you about the description in “In Brief” of the paper.
You or editorial staff described that ---- finding that disordered proteins are frequent targets of high-affinity antibodies. But on the basis on you date, the description should be that disordered proteins have tendency to present immunogen with higher efficient antigenicity without different affinity compared to ordered proteins.
Is it right?
I think the character might explain my struggle.
I have identified Bcnt/Cfdp1, epigenetic factor, more than 20 years (please see the attached pdf file) and have struggled with off-targets of its peptide antibody. Recently we identified a off-target as Glutamine synthetase, completely different from Bcnt/Cfdp1. We presented the abstract in the last year annual meeting in Japan (attached file) and are going to resubmit.
Could you give me your thought about the off-target problem from your study?

Thank you very much for your kind consideration,
With my best regards,

All four examples that you mentioned are used by researchers and also by me. Social media are important because there are open or closed groups, for example on facebook where we, partly unofficially, discuss some issues. Authors, or better to say members of these groups put their announces there. another similar form are forums on some scientific platforms such as Researchgate where you can ask questions and start discussions. It can be about some of your ideas or just published articles. Also, there are standard discussion forums below every published artic.e

Mostly I utilize the discussions at the special symposium that I organize during the last 20 years ( I am the permanent member and Chair or vice-chair of the Advisory board of the International Symposium on Technetium and Rhenium-Sciences and Utilisation (ISTR), as it is the most concentrated come-together of the specialists. I issue the Proceedings of the ISTR Symposium, I have a site www.technetium-99.ru for it.
I utilise specialized social media (researchgate.net - I consider this very important, linkedin.com, etc.). I send press-releases through the University, Ministry and international organisations (ACS, NEA-TDB/OECD, IAEA, Japan Nuclear Energy Agency and friendly Universities).
I communicate by e-mail the important results a month before it is published to my friendly specialists in my field.

I indeed cite my own papers carefully, but not excessively. I try to build a "network" of publications by this, since I publish on several major human diseases, and therefore in different journal (group)s

Reprints are increasingly a thing of the past. I rarely print out articles anymore, I have a searchable database of article pdf's on my computers.

I am afraid I do not use social media for my published work. I still think it is considered a bit gauche to do so - in my field (biomedical research). I DO upload my publications on ResearchGate when allowed. And send private copies to people who ask.

Press releases ARE important, but not for citations. .

PubFacts is one of the fairly consistent presence on social media and scholarly sites. I share my scientific publications and they send them as mail to everyone who share the same research areas. The scopus, google scholar and researchgate are very useful to make h-index and also helpful enhancing citation and free to access and RG details for providing the possibilty of directly requaeting authors for prints/copies. The similar way also PubFacts has provide many help that work has then been cited subsequently.

1. Promote article through scholarly or professional networks such as Research Gate and LinkedIn so that your network or the relevant group will see your work. Upload the full paper to your personal page if the article is published as open access or where there is no issue with copyrights. Otherwise, provide an abstract and link(s) to the article on the journal's website.
2. Promote article through social media such as Facebook, Twitter. On your profile, include a one-or-two sentence introduction to the article with a link to the article on the journal's website. Whenever possible, provide a visual.
3. Post a description of your work on your personal blog or website.
4. Share your work in your faculty/medical school/university via emails, research bulletins, meetings, conferences, etc. Your Deputy Dean for Research would be glad to assist.
5. Present your paper in international conferences, share the link to your publication and distribute an abstract of your published research.

My work is in population health

Capture and clarify the minimum and maximum implications of the findings (including 'no relationship' -- if that is your result).

Be sure it is not cliche or trivia. Avoid using ridicule or sarcasm in reference to other ideas or other studies.

If it has been found and published before then clarify and highlight the setting differences in your study compared to other studies -- you will have confirmation, or conditional similarity, or differences to be explained and of blah blah scientiifc significance. Defend your design - be polite..

Be sure you measured well, had sufficient study subjects to detect the effect of interest, and include potential confunders (alternative causes)

Write a brief introduction that includes background info and our 'scientific rationale' for investigating the topic.

In fthe concluding implications paragraph do not introduce anything from other data you did not collect.

And now -- some mechanics....

create a lot of 'white space' - eg good space between paras, short paras . Use active voice (10-12 lines)

Be consistent with section labelling

Title -- up to 15 lines (my 'first law'). If cannot fit in 15 words then no more than 20 words ('second law')oypne

Target a journal that always allows free access by anyone and is well known and at least 5 years old.

As an author, I make use of and constantly update other online research platforms (e.g. ResearchGate, Google Scholar Citations, Mendeley) to ensure that relevant people in the field are notified of the articles I publish. The usage of keywords within the article itself is also of the utmost importance to reach a wider audience group. Last but not least, I inform my peers of recent publications to gain some traction for the respective papers.

The dissemination strategy depends on type of publication. A press release has been set up for some of the Cochrane reviews. I am not active on twitter, nor Facebook but the author group typically also disseminates through twitter, and we update research networks like ORCID, LinkedIn, Pubfacts, Research Gate etc. We occasionally use Podcasts with few minute summaries of the published work. The university website keeps a repository of all open access publications. For Cochrane reviews, a great deal of attention is given to publish plain language summaries, that are open access. Open access publications with plain language summaries are expected to increase dissemination, where social media is helpful to raise awareness of the publication. Our university, but also Cochrane uses newsletters with lists of recent publications to raise awareness as well.

I find these ways to increase visibility of a published paper:
1. Use multiple sources like research gate, LinkindIn, academia etc. to upload your paper (full or just abstract).
2. Publish link of your paper in relevant questions at various discussions forums (do not spam).
3. Conferences can be utilized as an efficient platform for making impact of your research.
4. Write popular articles in newspapers or some other journals (which publish one to two pages).
5. Share your work on facebook or twitter, use relevant hashtags.

There are many differet ways, however sharing a paper through various social medias is the most effective way to increase awareness of your publication, which can be followed by such new indexes like "Altmeric" that provide the impact of your paper throughout social media and specialists who mention your article in this way. Therefore, connecting with popular specialists and make collaboration with them can have a strong impact on visibility of your paper.

I believe that publishing in a high impact factor journal is the best method to increase the visibility of your publication of more than any other way, without increasing the self-citation. Although, bring reprints to conferences and sending a press release through the university are also very important. However, utilizing social media is not possible for all publications.

To more visibility, I try to cite appropriate papers. Also, choosing a good journal is important too. Connection with expert researchers and writing my paper share with them is another method for more visibility.

when the article is published, it is because the subject is of high value to the scientific society and has its own readers and followers., therefore, the citations and referrals would increase naturally. what I think is important for visibility, is the quality of the paper, being genuine, having a say in the subject and its reliability. It is the content and its novelty which absorbs its own readers.

Before publishing, I think at the first the subject of the paper must be attractive and it uses by a lot of the authors. For example, the papers that reported the prevalence of the diseases especially cancers can have more citations. Prominent journals are effective too.
After publishing the social networking sites and social media can increase the visibility of the papers. The presentation at the conferences is effective too.

Creating Networks among the publication companies can improve the visibility of publications.
Journals should encourage authors to include maximum possible scientific social and web IDs of the authors in the paper, further the journals should make sure the links are directly connected.
Predatory journals should be officially controlled or blocked, because those junk emails are discouraging scientist to read appropriate emails with correct publication links.
Separate tool can be developed to bring all the scientific platforms under a single umbrella to generate field specific alert to readers.
Authors can create their profiles with complete data in the following scientific social and web based forums including Pubfacts
Publon
Researcherid
ORCID
SCOPUS
Mandeley
PubFacts
Research Gate
Google Scholar
ISNI
LOOP
Authors should utilize the options like linking various scientific websites, example ORCID ID can be linked with Mandeley, Researcherid, Publon etc.
Article sharing options can be incorporated in the journal website.

When possible, I add a preprint that can be viewed publically; I personally prefer ResearchGate.

When published, I usually take a screenshot of the article title and author list and use social media to promote it. For me, it's with Twitter and LinkedIn.

University press releases are fantastic, although I've been denied a press release the past couple of times of tried.
The most common I was trying to increase the visibility of my articles are presenting at a conference and releasing it on "Research Get". However, we can use social media such as Facebook; releasing reprinting, citation, promoting the results at other meetings and even re-publishing the article.

Having your university do a press release is one of the best ways to promote a paper. The university (or the author) should contact the journal and let them know. Often the journal will assist in distributing the press release. This helps a paper reach a wider audience that includes the general public. To promote to other scientists that you know, use social media. I recommend twitter and linkedin. Hashtag your university and the journal so that they repost, retweet, or share.

There are a number of methods I have used to help publicize my work. I post announcements on my personal website as my work progresses over time. For example, I post information about new research, date/time of my upcoming presentation(s), presentation(s) materials, and link(s) to article(s) I publish. Other online sources, like PubFacts, is excellent as well! I present at a range of conferences, both nationally and internationally. This allows me to connect with professionals across disciplines and with other academics and practitioners in my own field. Finally, I publish through academic and popular presses to help share my work with a wide audience.

For me, I find putting it on academic sites like researchgate, pubfacts works wonders in increasing visibility. Presentations at conferences may help in sensitization about the work. For use of social media, if you don't have a large following, it becomes a limitation. Though I personally have not used it but I have seen other researchers post links on general sites for colleagues to read.

I have cited the paper whenever appropriate in national and regional conferences, making sure that the policy makers are involved in the discussion. For example we published on how use of adolescent and paediatric friendly services improved retention into HIV care. We first disseminated the findings locally with the health providers and managers at the study locality .. this encouraged them to improve the services and allocate resources to scale them up. At national level we conducted a dissemination workshop and invited policy makers from the MOH, who then saw the need to allocate resources for the same in other areas, and include in policy guidance.

Additionally we have made posters that are displayed in our office at the reception for interested guests. In addition since we are involved in building capacity of health providers in different aspects we always put the published posters in the halls and folks read these during their breaks; aking questions, clarifications and sharing experiences.

What you propose does not seem to be a good scientific question. However, I am ready to engage on any pleasant discussion of some scientific subject, whatever it is. For example, I am now studying the question of the cosmic and biological origins (believe me !). This is a matter that likely shall never be solved, but how fascinating to try to understand it ! It is facinating, indeed !

I obviously cite my own papers when relevant and appropriate. I give talks at conferences and invited colloquia in which I will report the research before it has been published, and then include it as context to further research. Also at conferences I meet people from different disciplines who are interested in the research, and I tell them about my papers and send a link.
I post it on my own web page, and it is in my university's research depository.
I post it to Researchgate, Academia.edu and other professional sites.

I share the link to my paper through platforms such as facebook, twitter, scoopit, whatsApp, just to mention a few. I also share the work through profession sites such as linkedin, ResearchGate, Publons, and Academia. First, I want to say: "Merry Christmas and happy new year" to Christian people all around the world.
Second, I think that I use all the options.
1. Cite the paper whenever appropriate: It shows that you have studied other peoples' work.
2. Bring reprint to conferences: If your paper print in a valid journal, it isn't necessary.
3. Utilize social media: It's a good idea for introducing out work to other people and everyone who is keen to our research field.
4. Send a press release through your university: Why not! It depends on the University whether to support the students or faculty members in publishing their papers open-source or not.

What are some methods which you as a scientific author have used to increase awareness of your published research?

Some answers:
1# Cite the paper whenever appropriate
2# Bring reprints to conferences
3# Utilize social media (how?)
In China we use wechat or other social media to deliver a brief summary of our publications. see example
http://www.sohu.com/a/276061453_472924
4# Send a press release through your university.
example in our institute for Advanced Interdisplinary Research (iair) of University of Jinan (UJN), Shandong
http://iair.ujn.edu.cn/info/1067/1333.htm
5# What are your tricks and secrets to generating more awareness of your articles?
Choose the open access service of the publishers.

It is a critical question from PUBFACTS. Nowadays, a number of scientific media available to attract a scientific and industrial audience. But most of them are business minded, do not have scientific ethics. It means each media play like Twitter tags. Only open access articles will be able to access all the articles whether reading or citing.
Because each publisher doing the same thing (Elsevier, Springer, Nature, BMJ, BMC, SAGE, DOVE press, ACS, RSC) the articles accessible to only subscribers. So, its quite hard to get more citation or even more reading.
In my point, the creator of this question should answer this easy question ...........

I think the visibility of a paper is more related to delivering high quality research and also very much linked to the scientific subject/area that you publish. It is also is highly dependent on the type of journal you choose for publication. Basically publishing high quality research in an internationally recognized journal will in itself bring about more visibility.

Further visibility is perhaps brought about by participating in scientific conferences.

Lo importante de los artículos citados es el rigor científico,a pesar que puede ser utilizadas las redes sociales como facebook,pero no debe ser la norma.

For me, inserting the key words into the title and the abstract seems to be a good approach to earn visualization.

Publish high quality studies in high impact journals and this likely will lead to lecture invitations and collaboration with other centers. Citing your prior work is important but that assumes you are publishing many articles a year. You want others to cite your work, then submit to national and International meetings to get exposure.
