Imaging of Tendinopathies in Advancing Age.

Authors:
Cristy French Kenneth Lee Jon Jacobson Nathalie J Bureau

Radiol Clin North Am 2022 Jul 20;60(4):583-592. Epub 2022 May 20.

Department of Radiology, Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM), 1000 Rue Saint-Denis, Montreal, Quebec H2X 0C1, Canada. Electronic address:

Aging changes tendon biology, healing capacity, and biomechanical properties and results in increased susceptibility to injuries. With the aging population, the socio-economic burden from tendinopathies is increasing. This article discusses the structure of tendons and the physiologic changes that occur with aging. We then discuss some of the most prevalent tendinopathies affecting the elderly population. Finally, we provide an overview of current knowledge on the nonsurgical management of tendinopathies and advanced imaging techniques to improve the aging and diseased tendon characterization.

Repetitive stress injuries to the human shoulder rotator cuff, and particularly the supraspinatus tendon (SST), are highly prevalent and debilitating. These injuries typically occur through application of cyclic load below the threshold necessary to cause acute tears, leading to accumulation of incremental damage that exceeds the body's ability to heal, resulting in decreased mechanical strength and increased risk of frank rupture at lower loads. Consistent progression of fatigue damage across multiple model systems suggests a generalized tendon response to overuse. Read More

Characterization of Polyvascular Disease in Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Its Association With Circulating Lipoprotein(a) Levels.

Background Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) more likely exhibits extensive atherosclerotic disease at multiple vascular beds. Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is an atherogenic lipoprotein that elevates HeFH-related atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risks. Whether circulating Lp(a) level associates with polyvascular propagation of atherosclerosis in subjects with HeFH remains uncertain. Read More

The Trillat Procedure for Anterior Glenohumeral Instability.

JBJS Rev 2022 Jul 4;10(7). Epub 2022 Aug 4.

Paris Shoulder Unit, Clinique Bizet, Paris, France.

»: Anterior glenohumeral instability (AGI) is a challenging condition that requires close attention to osseous and soft-tissue abnormalities. The morphometric variance of the periarticular scapular anatomy may be involved in the pathogenesis of recurrent traumatic anterior instability.

»: The Trillat procedure repositions the coracoid medially and downward by a partial wedge osteotomy, mimicking the sling effect of the Latarjet procedure by moving the conjoint tendon closer to the joint line in throwing position. Read More

Tenogenic induction of human adipose-derived stem cells by soluble tendon extracellular matrix: composition and transcriptomic analyses.

Stem Cell Res Ther 2022 Jul 29;13(1):380. Epub 2022 Jul 29.

Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Sha Tin, Hong Kong, SAR, China.

Background: Tendon healing is clinically challenging largely due to its inferior regenerative capacity. We have previously prepared a soluble, DNA-free, urea-extracted bovine tendon-derived extracellular matrix (tECM) that exhibits strong pro-tenogenic bioactivity on human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). In this study, we aimed to elucidate the mechanism of tECM bioactivity via characterization of tECM protein composition and comparison of transcriptomic profiles of hASC cultures treated with tECM versus collagen type I (Col1) as a control ECM component.
