Lymphatic Interventions in the Cancer Patient.

Authors:
Eslam Wassal Youssef Ahmed Aly Akshaar Brahmbhatt Amgad Moussa Ernesto Santos

Curr Oncol Rep 2022 May 31. Epub 2022 May 31.

Department of Radiology, Interventional Radiology Service, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY, 10065, USA.

Purpose Of Review: The incidence of lymphatic leakage (iatrogenic and non-iatrogenic) is growing in cancer population due to the increased complexity of the surgical procedures and improved overall survival in cancer patients. The purpose of this article is to review the contemporary approach in the field of percutaneous lymphatic embolization in cancer patients with lymphatic leaks.

Recent Findings: Since the advent of intranodal lymphangiography in 2011 alongside with the MR and CT lymphangiography, the accuracy of diagnosis of the lymphatic diseases has significantly improved significantly. These advancements have triggered a revival of minimally invasive lymphatic interventions. Lymphatic embolization is expanding from the classic indication, thoracic duct embolization, to other lymphatic disorders (chylous ascites, lymphoceles, liver lymphorrhea, protein-losing enteropathy). The growth of lymphatic research and the standardization of the lymphatic interventions require a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach between physicians and researchers.

Conservative interventions and clinical outcome measures used in the perioperative rehabilitation of breast cancer patients undergoing mastectomy: a scoping review.

Authors:

BMC Womens Health 2022 Aug 16;22(1):343. Epub 2022 Aug 16.

Department of Human Kinetics, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, 3351, boul. des Forges, C.P. 500, Trois-Rivières, QCQC, G8Z 4M3, Canada.

Background: Mastectomy is the first-line treatment approach for more than 90% of breast cancer patients. The numerous physical impairments associated with this surgical procedure negatively impact the patient's quality of life. To date, rehabilitation resources available for breast cancer patients undergoing mastectomy within the institutions affiliated to the Centre intégré universitaire de soins de santé et de services sociaux de la Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Québec (CIUSSS-MCQ) are lacking and do not always seem to reflect the particularities of breast cancer care pathways. Background: Lymphatic malformations (LMs) are benign, congenital lesions that display considerable heterogeneity in terms of size, location and characteristics. This study aims to describe the long-term outcomes of current management strategies for patients with simple (cystic) LMs.

Methods: The case records of all patients (age ≤16 years) with simple (cystic) LMs at our tertiary institution between 2008 and 2019 were assessed for clinical features, imaging and details of management, including complications. Read More

Australasian College of Phlebology (ACP).

International evidence-based guidelines recommend preoperative duplex ultrasound mapping in the assessment of chronic venous disease (CVD), and concurrent ultrasound imaging to guide superficial endovenous interventions such as endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), cyanoacrylate adhesive closure (CAC) and sclerotherapy (ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, UGS). Other imaging modalities such as venography, alone or in combination with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), may be included in the preoperative assessment of a small and select group of patients to exclude central venous obstruction, certain deep venous pathologies, pelvic-origin extra-pelvic varices and complex vascular malformations. The signatory scientific and medical societies recommend against the routine use of fluoroscopy and other radiation-based imaging in the investigation and treatment of superficial venous disease.
