Purpose: To evaluate the clinical effect of combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment with invisible aligner technique without brackets in skeletal Class Ⅲ patients with facial asymmetry.

Methods: A total of 24 skeletal Class Ⅲ patients with facial asymmetry treated with combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment during the past 4 years were reviewed. Patients in the experimental group(n=12) were treated with invisible aligner technique without brackets, while patients in the control group(n=12) were treated with traditional fixed orthodontic technique for pre- and post-operative orthodontic treatment respectively. The cephalometric parameters and satisfaction questionnaire scores of the two groups before and after treatment were compared and analyzed with SPSS 20.0 software package for t test and Wilcoxon rank sum test, respectively.

Results: After treatment, the cephalometric parameters of SNA, SNB, ANB, U1-SN and L1-MP values were changed significantly(P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the values of experimental group and the control group(P>0.05). The scores of aesthetics, comfort, portability, masticatory and speech function in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.05). The satisfaction scores of the two groups were both 8.8±0.5(P>0.05).

Conclusions: Skeletal Class Ⅲ patients with facial asymmetry could obtain good clinical effect by using invisible aligner technique. The patients were satisfied with the aesthetics, comfort and the effect of combined invisible orthodontic and orthognathic treatment.

Does Total Parotidectomy Improve Survival Over Partial Parotidectomy in Early-Stage Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland?

Purpose: The decision to perform a partial or total parotidectomy in localized high-grade parotid cancer is often a matter of debate in the absence of a deep lobe disease. The purpose of this study was to compare survival between patients submitted to partial and total parotidectomy for early-stage parotid adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC).

Patients And Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from 2004 through 2017. Read More

Swallowing function in the chronic stage following stroke is associated with white matter integrity of the callosal tract between the interhemispheric S1 swallowing representation areas.

Functional Imaging Unit, Diagnostic Radiology and Neuroradiology, University of Greifswald, Germany.

Sensorimotor representations of swallowing in pre- and postcentral gyri of both cerebral hemispheres are interconnected by callosal tracts. We were interested in (1) the callosal location of fibers interconnecting the precentral gyri (with the primary motor cortex; M1) and the postcentral gyri (with the primary somatosensory cortex; S1) relevant for swallowing, and (2) the importance of their integrity given the challenges of swallowing compliance after recovery of dysphagia following stroke. We investigated 17 patients who had almost recovered from dysphagia in the chronic stage following stroke and age-matched and gender-matched healthy controls. Read More

Trends in maxillofacial fractures in Otago-Southland, New Zealand: 2009 to 2020.

Aims: Fractures to the maxillofacial region can have a serious impact on quality of life. The over-representation of males in the occurrence of almost all types and mechanisms of these injuries has tended to divert attention away from maxillofacial fractures in females. This study aimed to describe trends in maxillofacial trauma in a New Zealand tertiary trauma centre over a 12 year period, with a particular focus on gender differences. Read More

JMIR Form Res 2022 Jun 30;6(6):e33813. Epub 2022 Jun 30.

Background: In face-to-face therapy for eating disorders, therapeutic alliance (TA) is an important predictor of symptom reduction and treatment completion. To date, however, little is known about TA during web-based cognitive behavioral therapy (web-CBT) and its association with symptom reduction, treatment completion, and the perspectives of patients versus therapists.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate TA ratings measured at interim and after treatment, separately for patients and therapists; the degree of agreement between therapists and patients (treatment completers and noncompleters) for TA ratings; and associations between patient and therapist TA ratings and both eating disorder pathology and treatment completion. Numerous diseases in humans have been associated with mutations of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA). This genome encodes 13 protein subunits of complexes involved in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), a process that provides aerobic eukaryotes with the energy-rich adenosine triphosphate molecule (ATP). Mutations of the mtDNA may therefore have dramatic consequences especially in tissues and organs with high energy demand. Read More
