Facial Cutaneous Metastases of Gastric Signet-ring Cell Carcinoma: Resection and Reconstruction as a Palliative Surgical Treatment Option.

Authors:
André M Eckardt Walter Back

In Vivo 2022 May-Jun;36(3):1508-1512

Institute of Pathology, Bremerhaven, Germany.

Background: Cutaneous metastases of gastric signet-ring cell gastric carcinoma are very rare. Our following case report highlights the need for careful clinical examination and skin biopsy of newly developing scar-like or erythematous skin lesions in patients with a known history of malignant disease in order to prevent diagnostic and therapeutic delay.

Case Report: A 68-year-old male patient presented with two slightly painful, erythematous, facial skin lesions (chin and forehead) 2 years after gastrectomy for a signet-ring cell gastric carcinoma. The patient complained of intermittent neuropathic pain in the area of the mental nerve. A biopsy of both skin lesions demonstrated metastasis of signet-ring cell gastric carcinoma. Following discussion within the multidisciplinary tumor board, palliative surgical excision was recommended for this patient. Both skin lesions were resected and the large defect in the chin region was primarily closed by a cervical skin transposition flap.

Conclusion: The presented case report of a patient with a known history of malignancy illustrates that newly developing erythematous skin lesions may be suspicious for cutaneous metastases. Palliative surgical interventions may play a role even in an advanced disease stage.

Drug Des Devel Ther 2022 3;16:2509-2515. Epub 2022 Aug 3.

Pediatrics, First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, Taiyuan City, People's Republic of China.

Objective: Infantile eczema (IE), a common pediatric allergic skin disease caused by multiple inherent and external factors, is common in infants and young children, with skin lesions and itching as the main clinical manifestations. At present, its pathological mechanism has not been thoroughly clarified, but scholars believe that it is related to the joint action of various internal and external factors. This research aims to investigate the influences of bifid triple viable capsules plus cetirizine (CTZ) on gut microbiota (GMB) and immunity in children with eczema. Read More

Background: Recently, the expression of the mast cell (MC) receptor Mas-related G protein-coupled receptor X2 (MRGPRX2) has been detected in lesional skin of adult patients with cutaneous mastocytosis. As of yet, little is known about the clinical relevance of MRGPRX2 and its agonists in patients with mastocytosis, including indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM).

Methods: MRGPRX2 and MRGPRX2 agonists, cortistatin (CST), and major basic protein (MBP) were analyzed in lesional and non-lesional skin of patients with ISM and skin of healthy controls by immunohistochemistry. Read More

Identifying genetic variation underlying human diseases establishes targets for therapeutic development and helps tailor treatments to individual patients. Large-scale transcriptomic profiling has extended the study of such molecular heterogeneity between patients to somatic tissues. However, the lower resolution of bulk RNA profiling, especially in a complex, composite tissue such as the skin, has limited its success. Read More
