Comprehensive Evaluation of the Lower Eyelid Aging Process Among Asian Women.

Authors:
Chun-Yu Cheng Sindy Hu Shyue-Luen Chang Mei-Ching Lee Yau-Li Huang

Dermatol Surg 2022 Jun 22;48(6):653-658. Epub 2022 Mar 22.

Department of Dermatology, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Chang Gung University College of Medicine, Taoyuan, Taiwan.

Background: Lower eyelid aging is a complicated process, and for that reason, a comprehensive assessment of the lower eyelid is important before treatment.

Objective: This study was conducted to analyze and assess the lower eyelid aging process between different age groups of Asian women.

Methods And Materials: The authors developed the comprehensive lower eyelid age rating scale (CLEARS). The rating scale contains 3 domains and each composed of 3 items. Individuals were evaluated by the age group starting with the third decade (20-29 years) through the seventh decade (60-69 years) by 2 dermatologists working independently.

Results: A total of 114 cases were evaluated. The total scores of CLEARS increased significantly between each adjacent age group. The scores of the snap test and the severity of fine lines, nasojugal groove, midcheek furrow, and eye bags increased significantly from the 3rd decade. The scores of the distraction test and the severity of palpebromalar groove and malar mound begin to increase with the 4th decade. Kappa coefficients of all items achieved moderate to substantial agreement.

Conclusion: This study describes the lower eyelid aging process among Asian women by CLEARS assessment. Lower eyelid aging becomes progressively more notable beginning with the third decade.

Manpreet Nijjar Serafeim-Chrysovalantis Kotoulas Jan Kerr Renata L Riha

Sleep Breath 2022 Aug 9. Epub 2022 Aug 9.

Sleep Research Unit, The University of Edinburgh, 51 Little France Crescent, Edinburgh, EH16 4SA, Edinburgh, UK.

Introduction: Floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) is an underdiagnosed condition stereotypically found in obese, middle-aged men, characterized by a lax eyelid tarsus which readily everts without excess mechanical manipulation. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is the most frequently reported comorbidity in patients suffering from FES. The aim of this study was to determine whether or not individuals with FES present with distinct anthropometric characteristics in comparison to patients without FES suspected of having OSA. Purpose: To compare the ocular surface and meibum microbial communities of humans with Blepharitis (DB) and healthy controls.

Methods: Conjunctival sac and meibum samples from 25 DB patients and 11 healthy controls were analyzed using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS).

Results: The alpha-diversity of the conjunctival sac microbiome of the group (observed, Chao1, ACE) was lower than that of the control group, whereas all meibum diversity indicators were similar. Read More
