The feasibility of stable nitritation of sludge alternately treated by free nitrous acid (FNA) and heat shock in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was investigated in this study. The linear regression method was used to determine the optimal treatment conditions. Results revealed that an FNA concentration of 2.20 mg HNO-N/L, exposure time of 24 h, and treatment ratio of 20% could inhibit nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) activity to the greatest extent while maintaining the maximum ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) activity; after heat shock at 60 °C for 20 min, NOB were inhibited while AOB still had certain activity. In the long-term continuous-flow experiment, the single FNA or heat shock treatments easily allowed adapt NOB to affect the stability of nitritation. The alternating FNA/heat shock treatment can achieve long-term stability of nitritation. Microbial community analysis revealed that the alternating FNA/heat shock treatment could inhibit NOB while maintaining high AOB abundance.

Heat shock is a heat-related pathology characterized by a high body temperature and an obvious change of many enzymatic activities. Carboxylesterase (CE), as the major hydrolase in liver, is responsible for the hydrolysis of many drugs or the detoxification of various toxins from all organs. However, the correlation between heat shock and the CE activity in cells remains unknown, mainly due to the lack of a suitable research approach. Read More

The nucleolus is a multi-compartment, non-membrane bound organelle within the nucleus. Nucleolar assembly is influenced by proteins capable of phase separation. Xenopus laevis oocytes contain hundreds of large nucleoli that provide experimental access for nucleoli that is unavailable in other systems. Read More

Background: Transcriptome sequencing is an effective tool to reveal the essential genes and pathways underlying countless biotic and abiotic stress adaptation mechanisms. Although severely challenged by diverse environmental conditions, the Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai remains a high-value aquaculture mollusk and a Chinese predominantly cultured abalone species. Salinity is one of such environmental factors whose fluctuation could significantly affect the abalone's cellular and molecular immune responses and result in high mortality and reduced growth rate during prolonged exposure. Evolutionarily conserved heat shock proteins are involved in the heat shock response of cells in response to changes in the external environment. In normal tissues, heat shock proteins can help cells survive in a rapidly changing environment. Likewise, in malignant tumors heat shock proteins may help tumor cells cope with external stresses as well as the stress of treatment. Read More

A slowly growing mycobacteria, identified as strain TY59, was isolated from sputum of an elderly man with pneumonia. Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that this strain was similar to members of the complex and closely related species. Strain TY59 has highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to the type strains of (99. Read More
