Breeding Potentials of Bambara Groundnut for Food and Nutrition Security in the Face of Climate Change.

Authors:
Oluwaseyi Samuel Olanrewaju Olaniyi Oyatomi Olubukola Oluranti Babalola Michael Abberton

Front Plant Sci 2021 5;12:798993. Epub 2022 Jan 5.

Genetic Resources Center (GRC), International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria.

Constant production of quality food should be a norm in any community, but climate change, increasing population, and unavailability of land for farming affect food production. As a result, food scarcity is affecting some communities, especially in the developing world. Finding a stable solution to this problem is a major cause of concern for researchers. Synergistic application of molecular marker techniques with next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies can unlock the potentials hidden in most crop genomes for improving yield and food availability. Most crops such as Bambara groundnut (BGN), Winged bean, and African yam bean are underutilized. These underutilized crops can compete with the major crops such as cowpea, soybean, maize, and rice, in areas of nutrition, ability to withstand drought stress, economic importance, and food production. One of these underutilized crops, BGN [ (L.), Verdc.], is an indigenous African legume and can survive in tropical climates and marginal soils. In this review, we focus on the roles of BGN and the opportunities it possesses in tackling food insecurity and its benefits to local farmers. We will discuss BGN's potential impact on global food production and how the advances in NGS technologies can enhance its production.

This study proposed a lactate-based two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD) process to enhance bioenergy production rate from food waste (FW) and investigated the effect of inoculum addition and culture pH on hydrolysis-acidogenesis and further methanization. A series of batch fermentations were performed with an enriched lactate-producing consortium and without inoculum addition under controlled (5.7) and uncontrolled pH (initial 6. Read More

As a source of several valuable products, photosynthetic microorganisms (microalgae and cyanobacteria) have many applications in biomedical, electrochemical, and urban-space fields. Microalgal and cyanobacterial (photoautotrophs) implementations have been the subject matter of several reviews, which mainly focused on exploring effective methods of their harvesting, optimal cultivation conditions, energy conversion efficiency, and new strategies for microalgal health-promoting compound recovery. This review highlights recent investigations into biomedical, urban, environmental, and electrical engineering microalgae and cyanobacteria applications over the last seven years. Read More

Institute of Microbial Pharmaceuticals, College of Life and Health Sciences, Northeastern University, Shenyang 110169, PR China. Electronic address:

Guava is a popular fruit consumed worldwide with beneficial effects in regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. Although polysaccharides are a major phytochemical component of guava, to date, the alleviative effects of polysaccharides from the guava fruit against die-induced obesity remain unclear. The relationship between the anti-obesity effects of guava polysaccharide (GP) and gut microbiota is unknown. Read More

Maltoheptaose (G7) is one of the mixtures of maltodextrin widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. A genetically engineered strain, which simultaneously expressed cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) from Gracilibacillus alcaliphilus SK51.001 and cyclomaltodextrinase (CDase) from Bacillus sphaericus E-244, two enzymes, was constructed by cloning the above two genes into a plasmid and transformed into the host Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) (E. Are "liquid plastics" a new environmental threat? The case of polyvinyl alcohol.

Authors:
Lara Nigro Stefano Magni Marco Aldo Ortenzi Stefano Gazzotti Camilla Della Torre Andrea Binelli

Aquat Toxicol 2022 May 17;248:106200. Epub 2022 May 17.

Department of Biosciences, University of Milan, Via Celoria 26, Milan 20133, Italy.

Despite the pollution induced by plastics become a well-known and documented problem, bringing many countries to adopt restrictions about their production, commercialization and use, the impact of another emerging category of synthetic polymers, represented by the Water-Soluble Polymers (WSPs), also known as "liquid plastics", is overlooked by scientific community. WSPs are produced in large quantities and used in a wide plethora of applications such as food packaging, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, cosmetics and detergents, with a consequent continuous release in the environment. The aim of this study was the investigation of the possible toxicity induced by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), one of the main produced and used WSPs, on two freshwater model organisms, the crustacean Daphnia magna and the teleost Danio rerio (zebrafish).
