Toxic Metal Concentrations in Drinking Water and Possible Effect on Sex Hormones among Men in Sabongida-Ora, Edo State, Nigeria.

Authors:
Osaro Ogie Enehizena Mathias A Emokpae

Medicines (Basel) 2022 Jan 7;9(1). Epub 2022 Jan 7.

Department of Medical Laboratory Science, School of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Benin, Benin 300283, Nigeria.

Drinking water can be a potential source of toxic metals, which are a known leading cause of infertility in men. This study determines the concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) in drinking water (borehole, hand-dug well and treated water) and sex hormone levels (serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin (PROL), estradiol (E2), progesterone (PROG), and testosterone (T) in males who drink water mainly from these sources. The concentrations of Cd, and Pb in hand-dug wells were higher than the permissible limit recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) while Zn and Cu were within the permissible levels in drinking water. Blood Cd and Pb levels were significantly higher ( < 0.001) among subjects who consumed hand-dug and borehole water than treated water, while serum Zn was significantly lower ( < 0.001) in hand-dug well and borehole water consumers than in control subjects. Also, serum FSH ( < 0.001), LH ( < 0.001), E2 ( < 0.002), PROG ( < 0.04) and T ( < 0.001) were significantly lower among hand-dug well and borehole water consumers than controls, while PROL ( < 0.001) was significantly higher in hand-dug well and borehole water consumers than controls. Blood Cd and Pb levels were significantly higher ( < 0.001) in hand-dug well water consumers than borehole water consumers. The consumption of water from hand-dug wells may have adverse reproductive sequelae among consumers.

Wellbore Stability through Novel Catechol-Chitosan Biopolymer Encapsulator-Based Drilling Mud.

Authors:
Zhichuan Tang Zhengsong Qiu Hanyi Zhong Yujie Kang Baoyu Guo

Gels 2022 May 16;8(5). Epub 2022 May 16.

Drilling Technology Research Institute, Shengli Petroleum Engineering Corporation Limited of SINOPEC, Donying 257064, China.

The problem of wellbore stability has a marked impact on oil and gas exploration and development in the process of drilling. Marine mussel proteins can adhere and encapsulate firmly on deep-water rocks, providing inspiration for solving borehole stability problem and this ability comes from catechol groups. In this paper, a novel biopolymer was synthesized with chitosan and catechol (named "SDGB") by Schiff base-reduction reaction, was developed as an encapsulator in water-based drilling fluids (WBDF). Occurrence of Microplastics in Borehole Drinking Water and Sediments in Lagos, Nigeria.

Authors:
Babalola Aisosa Oni Samuel Eshorame Sanni

Environ Toxicol Chem 2022 May 18. Epub 2022 May 18.

Department of Chemical Engineering, Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria.

We investigated the occurrence of microplastics in samples of borehole drinking water and sediments obtained from borehole sites in Lagos Island, Nigeria. The samples were digested with hydrogen peroxide, pretreated, and filtered through a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane. The filtered microplastics were examined/analyzed under an attenuated total reflection Fourier-transformed infrared device, to quantify the microplastics. Read More

Height identification of water-permeable fractured zone based on synchronous movement in overlying strata.

Sci Rep 2022 May 9;12(1):7592. Epub 2022 May 9.

National University of Science and Technology «MISIS», Moscow, Russia, 119049.

Height identification of water-permeable fractured zone (WPFZ) is one of the decisive influence factors for mining safety, especially in some specific conditions, such as mining under aquifer. In order to demonstrate the formation process of the WPFZ, the scaling model experiment is carried out. Through the analysis of movement and breaking in overlying strata, the WPFZ height is significantly affected by mining range, movement characteristics of key strata and its follow-up strata. Data on occurrence and ecotoxicological risk of emerging contaminants in Dinaric karst catchment of Jadro and Žrnovnica springs.

Authors:

Data Brief 2022 Jun 10;42:108157. Epub 2022 Apr 10.

Department of Environmental Engineering, GFV - Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering, Hallerova aleja 7, Varaždin 42000, Croatia.

Karst catchments are valuable drinking water sources and fragile habitats to many endemic species. This dataset presents initial insights into the occurrence and ecotoxicological risk of 21 emerging contaminants (ECs) (including 11 pharmaceuticals, 4 lifestyle products, 2 personal care products, 3 agricultural and 1 industrial compound) detected in Dinaric karst catchment of Jadro and Žrnovnica springs in Croatia. Contaminants concentrations were determined with UHD Q-TOF LC/MS and UHP LC/MS in samples from two springs (Jadro and Žrnovnica), one river (Cetina), and a deep borehole (Gizdavac). Read More
