Protein S deficiency is associated with an increased risk of thromboembolism, which may be caused by hereditary deficiency and several physiological and pathologic conditions, such as pregnancy, contraceptive use, liver diseases, inflammatory disease, and certain viruses infections. However, monoclonal immunoglobulin-mediated Protein S deficiency is rarely reported. Here we described a 49-year-old woman with a history of recurrent painful swelling in both lower extremities due to venous thrombosis for 7 years, accompanied by recurrent gross hematuria and multiple painful necrotic purpuras for 5 years, who was then diagnosed with acquired Protein S deficiency induced by the monoclonal immunoglobulin. The intimate contact between the holoparasitic plant Lophophytum mirabile (Balanophoraceae) and its host plant (Fabaceae) facilitates the exchange of genetic information, increasing the frequency of horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Lophophytum stands out as it acquired a large number of mitochondrial genes (>20) from its legume host that replaced the majority of the native homologs. These foreign genes code for proteins that form multisubunit enzyme complexes, such as those in the oxidative phosphorylation system (OXPHOS) and cytochrome c maturation (ccm) system, together with dozens of nuclear-encoded subunits. Introduction: The nature of pharyngeal swallowing function during the course of recovery of dysphagia due to lateral medullary syndrome (LMS) is unclear. Vacuum swallowing is a compensatory swallowing method that improves the pharyngeal passage of a bolus by creating negative pressure during swallowing in the esophagus in patients with dysphagia due to LMS. We present a case involving a patient with dysphagia due to LMS who involuntarily acquired a swallowing method with prolonged and increased pharyngeal contraction and vacuum swallowing. Read More

Rationale: Infections with Sphingomonas paucimobilis are rarely described in the literature and can be community-acquired or associated with healthcare, especially in patients with chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes mellitus), malignancies, or other causes of immunosuppression, except in people without comorbidities.
