Background: Urine cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is an attractive target for diagnosing pulmonary Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) infection but has not been thoroughly characterized as a biomarker. Methods: We investigated the size and composition of urine cfDNA from TB patients with minimal bias using next-generation sequencing (NGS). We employed a combination of DNA extraction and single-stranded sequence library preparation methods demonstrated to recover short, highly degraded cfDNA fragments. Read More

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is not only used to aid the diagnosis of lung cancer, but also help monitor recurrence and determine the prognosis of lung cancer as well as evaluate the therapeutic efficacy for lung cancer. However, studies have also shown that CEA is present at low levels in the serum of patients with benign lung diseases (BLD), which will interfere with the accurate judgment of the disease. Due to difference in sample size, detection methods, cutoff values and sources of BLD, the positive rate of CEA in BLD is different with different literature. Read More

Objective: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a challenging inflammatory disorder of the breast. In this study we aimed to present the detailed clinical and morphological features of GM cases, diagnostic clues for specific and idiopathic etiologies, the difficulties in evaluating trucut biopsies, and the results of different therapeutic approaches.Material And Method: We retrospectively analysed the clinical, radiological and morphological features of 114 GM cases diagnosed with fine needle aspiration, and trucut, incisional, and excisional biopsy. Background: Rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) are a group of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) implicated in difficult-to-treat pulmonary and extrapulmonary diseases, possibly associated with invasive procedures and failures in sterilization of materials and equipment. Methods: We report our experience with the laboratory identification of RGM in a routine work and give an overview of the RGM isolated in our setting. Laboratorial data from all RGM mycobacterial isolates received at Adolfo Lutz Institute of São José do Rio Preto were analyzed from January 2000 to December 2015. Read More
