Imaging of the Vagina: Spectrum of Disease with Emphasis on MRI Appearance.

Authors:
Maria Zulfiqar Anup Shetty Motoyo Yano Melissa McGettigan Malak Itani Muhammad Naeem Valerie S Ratts Cary Lynn Siegel

Radiographics 2021 Sep-Oct;41(5):1549-1568. Epub 2021 Jul 23.

From the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (M.Z., A.S., M.I., M.N., C.L.S.) and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (V.S.R.), Washington University School of Medicine, 510 S Kingshighway Blvd, St Louis, MO 63110; Department of Radiology, Mayo Clinic Arizona, Scottsdale, Ariz (M.Y.); Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology, Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, Fla (M.M.); and Department of Oncologic Sciences, University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, Fla (M.M.).

The vagina is a median fibromuscular structure of the female reproductive system that extends from the vulva inferiorly to the uterine cervix superiorly. As most vaginal lesions are detected at gynecologic examination, imaging performed for nongynecologic indications can frequently cause concomitant vaginal pathologic conditions to be overlooked. The vagina is often underevaluated at routinely performed pelvic transvaginal US because of a narrow scan area and probe positioning. MRI has progressively become the imaging method of choice for vaginal pathologic conditions, as it provides excellent soft-tissue detail with unparalleled delineation of the complex pelvic floor anatomy and helps establish a diagnosis for most vaginal diseases. It is important that radiologists use a focused approach toward understanding and correctly recognizing different vaginal entities that may otherwise go unnoticed. In this case-based review, the authors discuss the key imaging features of wide-ranging vaginal pathologic conditions, with emphasis on appearance at MRI. Knowledge of vaginal anatomy and embryology is helpful in evaluating congenital anomalies at imaging. Often seen incidentally, vaginal inflammation can cause diagnostic confusion. Because of its central location in the pelvis, the vagina can form fistulas to the urinary bladder, colon, rectum, or anus. Vaginal masses can be neoplastic and nonneoplastic and include a myriad of benign and malignant conditions, some of which have characteristic imaging features. Therapeutic and nontherapeutic vaginal foreign bodies include pessaries, vaginal mesh, and packing that can be seen with or without associated complications. RSNA, 2021.

A Patient with Acute Abdominal Pain Caused by an Unnoticed Swallowed Toothpick Misdiagnosed as Acute Appendicitis.

Authors:

Arch Iran Med 2022 Apr 1;25(4):274-276. Epub 2022 Apr 1.

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Suining Central Hospital, Suining City, Sichuan Province, China.

The differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain is a challenging task for medical doctors working in the department of gastroenterology. It is clear that acute abdominal pain may be associated with a number of pathologic conditions. We report an unusual case of an unnoticed swallowed wooden toothpick stuck in the ileocecal area of a young man with right lower abdominal pain who was misdiagnosed as acute appendicitis. Read More

Extensional-Flow Impedance Cytometer for Contactless and Optics-Free Erythrocyte Deformability Analysis.

Authors:
Riccardo Reale Adele De Ninno Tiziana Nepi Paolo Bisegna Federica Caselli

IEEE Trans Biomed Eng 2022 Aug 8;PP. Epub 2022 Aug 8.

Objective: Deformability is an essential feature of red blood cells (RBCs), enabling them to undergo significant shape change in response to external forces. Impaired erythrocyte deformability is associated with several pathologic conditions, and quantitative measurement of RBC deformability is critical to understanding and diagnosing RBC related diseases. Whereas traditional approaches to cell mechanical characterization generally have limited throughput, emerging microscale technologies are opening new opportunities for high-throughput deformability cytometry at the single-cell level. Modulation of IL-4/IL-13 cytokine signaling in the context of allergic disease.

Authors:

J Allergy Clin Immunol 2022 Aug;150(2):266-276

Division of Immunobiology, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio; Department of Pediatrics, College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio. Electronic address:

Aberrant activation of CD4 T2 cells and excessive production of T2 cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-13 have been implicated in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. Generally, IL-4 and IL-13 utilize Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) signaling pathways for induction of inflammatory gene expression and the effector functions associated with disease pathology in many allergic diseases. However, it is increasingly clear that JAK/STAT pathways activated by IL-4/IL-13 can themselves be modulated in the presence of other intracellular signaling programs, thereby changing the overall tone and/or magnitude of IL-4/IL-13 signaling. Circadian clocks in the mammalian retina regulate a diverse range of retinal functions that allow the retina to adapt to the light-dark cycle. Emerging evidence suggests a link between the circadian clock and retinopathies though the causality has not been established. Here we report that clock genes are expressed in the mouse embryonic retina, and the embryonic retina requires light cues to maintain robust circadian expression of the core clock gene, Bmal1. Background: Postoperative cholangitis is a late complication of pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). This study aimed to elucidate the pathogenesis of post-PD cholangitis (PPDC) and explore its optimal treatment.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 210 patients who underwent PD at our institute between 2009 and 2018. Read More
