Complex carbohydrates, proteins, and other food components require a longer digestion process to be absorbed by the lining of the alimentary canal. In addition to the enzymes of the gastrointestinal tract, gut microbiota, comprising a large range of bacteria and fungi, has complementary action on the production of digestive enzymes. Within this universe of "hidden soldiers", lactobacilli are extensively studied because of their ability to produce lactase, proteases, peptidases, fructanases, amylases, bile salt hydrolases, phytases, and esterases. Background: The opportunistic pathogen Naegleria fowleri establishes infection in the human brain, killing almost invariably within 2 weeks. The amoeba performs piece-meal ingestion, or trogocytosis, of brain material causing direct tissue damage and massive inflammation. The cellular basis distinguishing N. Read More

Multi-drug-resistant bacteria present an urgent threat to modern medicine, creating a desperate need for antibiotics with new modes of action. As natural products remain an unsurpassed source for clinically viable antibiotic compounds, we investigate the mechanism of action of armeniaspirol. The armeniaspirols are a structurally unique class of Gram-positive antibiotic discovered from Streptomyces armeniacus for which resistance cannot be readily obtained. Read More

Background: Argentina's geothermal areas are niches of a rich microbial diversity. In 2020, species of Bacillus cytotoxicus were isolated for the first time from these types of pristine natural areas. Bacillus cytotoxicus strains demonstrated the capability to grow and degrade chicken feathers with the concomitant production of proteases with keratinolytic activity, enzymes that have multitude of industrial applications.
