The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the current surgical guideline stating that the main facial foramina that transmit cutaneous nerves to the face (supraorbital notch/foramen, infraorbital foramen, and mental foramen) are equidistant from the midline in European and Hispanic populations. Previous studies suggest this surgical guideline is not applicable for all ethnicities; however, to our knowledge, no data have been published regarding the accuracy of this guideline pertaining to the Hispanic population. An experimental study was performed on 67 cadavers donated to the Human Anatomy Program at UT Health San Antonio. Read More

Obesity and a prolonged surgical duration are reported risk factors for meralgia paresthetica (MP) after prone position surgery; however, this fails to explain why MP seldom occurs after prone position craniotomy. We reviewed the incidence of MP after spinal surgery and craniotomy in the prone position and investigated whether unidentified factors are involved in the mechanism of postoperative MP. Between January 2014 and March 2020, we performed 556 prone position surgeries. Read More

The most common procedure for the treatment of painful median nerve neuroma is coverage with vascularized soft tissue following external neurolysis. However, the ideal treatment should include reconnecting the proximal and distal stumps of the damaged nerve to allow the growth of regenerating axons to their proper targets for a functional recovery. We developed a useful technique employing radial artery perforator adipofascial flap including the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (LABCN) to repair the median nerve by vascularized nerve grafting and to achieve coverage of the nerve with vascularized soft tissue. Background: This study aimed to explore the efficacy of two unique combinations of nerve blocks on postoperative pain and functional outcome after total knee arthroplasty (TKA).Methods: Patients scheduled for TKA were randomized to receive a combination of adductor canal block (ACB) + infiltration between the popliteal artery and capsule of the posterior knee block (IPACK) + sham obturator nerve block (ONB) + sham lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block (LFCNB) (control group), or a combination of ACB + IPACK + ONB + sham LFCNB (triple nerve block group), or a combination of ACB + IPACK + ONB + LFCNB (quadruple nerve block group). All patients received local infiltration analgesia. Read More
