Introduction: The incidence of human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) associated meningitis has been declining in the post-combination antiretroviral treatment (ART) era, although survival rates remain low for the common causes like tuberculosis and cryptococcal disease. Diagnosis and treatment of meningitis in HIV-1 is complicated by atypical clinical presentations, limited accuracy of diagnostic tests, access to diagnostic tests, and therapeutic agents in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) and immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS).Areas Covered: We provide an overview of the common etiologies of meningitis in HIV-1-infected adults, suggest a diagnostic approach based on readily available tests, and review specific chemotherapeutic agents, host-directed therapies, supportive care, timing of ART initiation, and considerations in the management of IRIS with a focus on resource-limited settings. This study uses integrated art and science events to explore a blended approach in improving public understanding of current scientific topics and widening participation within the local community. The events were a Halloween-inspired microbiology-themed series of interactive exhibitions hosted within a national museum as part of an existing series of adult education evenings. A representative sample of 102 mixed methods exit questionnaires, based on determining (i) audience diversity and (ii) understanding of scientific topics, were analysed by qualitative and quantitative approaches, and a post-attendance focus group was carried out to determine longer term impact of the event. Purpose Of Review: Chronic diabetes-related complications continue to exert a rapidly growing and unsustainable pressure on healthcare systems worldwide. In type 1 diabetes, glycemic control is particularly challenging, as intensive management substantially increase the risk of severe hypoglycemic episodes. Alternative approaches to address this issue are required. Read More

Although combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) with three or more drugs is highly effective in suppressing viral load for people with HIV, many ART agents may exacerbate mental health-related adverse effects including depression. Therefore, understanding the effects of combination ART on mental health can help clinicians personalize medicine with less adverse effects to avoid undesirable health outcomes. The emergence of electronic health records offers researchers unprecedented access to HIV data including individuals' mental health records, drug prescriptions, and clinical information over time.
