Mycomedicine: A Unique Class of Natural Products with Potent Anti-tumour Bioactivities.

Authors:
Rongchen Dai Mengfan Liu Wan Najbah Nik Nabil Zhichao Xi Hongxi Xu

Molecules 2021 Feb 19;26(4). Epub 2021 Feb 19.

Shuguang Hospital, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai 201203, China.

Mycomedicine is a unique class of natural medicine that has been widely used in Asian countries for thousands of years. Modern mycomedicine consists of fruiting bodies, spores, or other tissues of medicinal fungi, as well as bioactive components extracted from them, including polysaccharides and, triterpenoids, etc. Since the discovery of the famous fungal extract, penicillin, by Alexander Fleming in the late 19th century, researchers have realised the significant antibiotic and other medicinal values of fungal extracts. As medicinal fungi and fungal metabolites can induce apoptosis or autophagy, enhance the immune response, and reduce metastatic potential, several types of mushrooms, such as and , have been extensively investigated, and anti-cancer drugs have been developed from their extracts. Although some studies have highlighted the anti-cancer properties of a single, specific mushroom, only limited reviews have summarised diverse medicinal fungi as mycomedicine. In this review, we not only list the structures and functions of pharmaceutically active components isolated from mycomedicine, but also summarise the mechanisms underlying the potent bioactivities of several representative mushrooms in the Kingdom Fungi against various types of tumour.

Pathogenic bacteria demonstrate incredible abilities to evade conventional antibiotics through the development of resistance and formation of dormant, surface-attached biofilms. Therefore, agents that target and eradicate planktonic and biofilm bacteria are of significant interest. We explored a new series of halogenated phenazines (HP) through the use of -aryl-2-nitrosoaniline synthetic intermediates that enabled functionalization of the 3-position of this scaffold. Read More

Tetracycline (TET) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which is frequently used in the prevention and treatment of animal diseases, feed additives, and so on. However, its residue and accumulation in animal-derived foods could cause several side effects to the human body. Herein, we fabricated TET aptamer-pendant DNA tetrahedral nanostructure-functionalized magnetic beads (Apt-tet MBs) as a probe to detect TET. Read More

Carbon source affects synthesis, structures, and activities of mycelial polysaccharides from medicinal fungus .

Authors:
Huihui He Yingying Li Mingyue Fang Tiantian Li Yunxiang Liang Yuxia Mei

J Microbiol Biotechnol 2021 Apr 21;31(5). Epub 2021 Apr 21.

State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology, College of Life Science and Technology, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan 430070, PR China.

Effects of various carbon sources on mycelial growth and polysaccharide synthesis of the medicinal fungus in liquid fermentation were investigated. After 12-d fermentation, mycelial biomass, polysaccharide yield, and polysaccharide content were significantly higher in Glc+Lac group (glucose and lactose used as combined carbon source) than in other groups. Crude polysaccharides (CIOPs) and the derivative neutral polysaccharides (NIOPs) were obtained from mycelia fermented using Glc, fructose (Fru), Lac, or Glc+Lac as carbon source. Read More

Excess glutamate in the central nervous system may be a major cause of neurodegenerative diseases with gradual loss and dysfunction of neurons. Primary or secondary metabolites from medicinal plants and algae show potential for treatment of glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. Three plant extracts were evaluated for impact on glutamate excitotoxicity-induced in primary cultures of retinal ganglion cells (RGC). Read More
