Investigating the Interactions of Glioma Stem Cells in the Perivascular Niche at Single-Cell Resolution using a Microfluidic Tumor Microenvironment Model.

Authors:
Emmanuela A Adjei-Sowah Samantha A O'Connor Jaimeson Veldhuizen Costanza Lo Cascio Christopher Plaisier Shwetal Mehta Mehdi Nikkhah

Adv Sci (Weinh) 2022 May 26:e2201436. Epub 2022 May 26.

School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, 85287-9709, USA.

The perivascular niche (PVN) is a glioblastoma tumor microenvironment (TME) that serves as a safe haven for glioma stem cells (GSCs), and acts as a reservoir that inevitably leads to tumor recurrence. Understanding cellular interactions in the PVN that drive GSC treatment resistance and stemness is crucial to develop lasting therapies for glioblastoma. The limitations of in vivo models and in vitro assays have led to critical knowledge gaps regarding the influence of various cell types in the PVN on GSCs behavior. Read More

Effectiveness of photodynamic therapy with 5-aminolevulinic acid for Bowenoid papulosis: a retrospective study with long-term follow-up.

Authors:
Qilei Che Xiaowen Huang Changxing Li Junpeng Li Lifen Jiang Kang Zeng

Photodiagnosis Photodyn Ther 2022 May 23:102918. Epub 2022 May 23.

Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, 510515, China. Electronic address:

Background: Bowenoid papulosis (BP) is a rare infectious skin disease that occurs in sexually active young people. BP is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV)16 and 18 infections, spreads through sexual contact, and tends to become cancerous. Currently, there are different BP treatment methods, and few reports on the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) (ALA-PDT). Read More

Subxiphoid single-port thymectomy without CO insufflation: Experience of a single center.

Authors:
Do Kyun Kang Min Kyun Kang

Asian Cardiovasc Thorac Ann 2022 May 26:2184923221104676. Epub 2022 May 26.

Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Haeundae Paik Hospital, 222187Inje University College of Medicine, Busan, Korea.

Background: The subxiphoid single-port approach for thymectomy has advantages compared with conventional lateral transthoracic approaches. Most of centers use CO insufflation to secure an appropriate surgical field during subxiphoid thymectomy, which causes fighting between surgical instruments and restrictions on the types of surgical instruments. The objective of this study is to introduce an effective method to establish the subxiphoid approach without CO insufflation using a retractor and steel wire. Read More

Encouraging specific biomarkers-based therapeutic strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Authors:
Min Yao Jun-Ling Yang De-Feng Wang Li Wang Ying Chen Deng-Fu Yao

World J Clin Cases 2022 Apr;10(11):3321-3333

Research Center of Clinical Medicine, Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, Nantong 226001, Jiangsu Province, China.

The prevention, early discovery and effective treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain a global medical challenge. At present, HCC is still mainly treated by surgery, supplemented by vascular embolization, radio frequency, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and biotherapy. The application of multikinase inhibitor sorafenib, chimeric antigen receptor T cells, or PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors can prolong the median survival of HCC patients. Read More

FAT1 downregulation enhances stemness and cisplatin resistance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Authors:
Yuanfang Zhai Chengyuan Shan Haoyu Zhang Pengzhou Kong Ling Zhang Yanqiang Wang Xiaoling Hu Xiaolong Cheng

Mol Cell Biochem 2022 May 23. Epub 2022 May 23.

Key Laboratory of Cellular Physiology of the Ministry of Education, Shanxi Medical University, 56 Xin Jian Nan Road, Taiyuan, 030001, Shanxi, People's Republic of China.

Primary or acquired drug resistance accounts for the failure of chemotherapy and cancer recurrence in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, the aberrant mechanisms driving drug resistance are not fully understood in ESCC. In our previous study, FAT Atypical Cadherin 1 (FAT1) was found to inhibit the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process in ESCC. Read More
