Ophthalmol Retina 2022 Aug 7. Epub 2022 Aug 7.

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Bonn, Bonn, Germany; The Lowy Medical Research Institute, La Jolla, CA, USA; The Scripps Research Institute, Department of Molecular Medicine, La Jolla, CA, USA. Electronic address:

Purpose: Tamoxifen-induced retinopathy (TR) and Macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel) share a highly similar retinal phenotype. In this study, we aim to evaluate differences as well as similarities that may point towards underlying mechanisms linking both disease entities.

Design: Retrospective, cross-sectional study SUBJECTS: Patients diagnosed with MacTel or TR. Read More

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood: a distinct clinical entity and ATP1A3-related disorders: A narrative review.

Authors:
Piero Pavone Xena Giada Pappalardo Martino Ruggieri Raffaele Falsaperla Enrico Parano

Medicine (Baltimore) 2022 Aug;101(31):e29413

Unit of Catania, National Council of Research, Institute for Research and Biomedical Innovation (IRIB), Catania, Italy.

Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC) is a rare disorder with onset in the first 18 months of life characterized by stereotyped paroxysmal manifestations of tonic and dystonic attacks, nystagmus with other oculomotor abnormalities, respiratory and autonomic dysfunctions. AHC is often associated with epileptic seizures and developmental delay. Hemiplegic paroxysm is the most remarkable symptom, although AHC includes a large series of clinical manifestations that interfere with the disease course. Read More

Testing the spectrum hypothesis of problematic online behaviors: A network analysis approach.

Addict Behav 2022 Jul 28;135:107451. Epub 2022 Jul 28.

Discipline of Clinical Psychology, University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia; School of Psychiatry, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

The validity of the constructs of problematic Internet or smartphone use and Internet or smartphone addiction has been extensively debated. The spectrum hypothesis posits that problematic online behaviors (POBs) may be conceptualized within a spectrum of related yet distinct entities. To date, the hypothesis has received preliminary support, and further robust empirical studies are still needed. Read More

Spinal Cord Stimulation Paradigms and Pain Relief: A Preclinical Systematic Review on Modulation of the Central Inflammatory Response in Neuropathic Pain.

Authors:
Thomas J de Geus Glenn Franken Elbert A J Joosten

Neuromodulation 2022 Aug 2. Epub 2022 Aug 2.

Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management, Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, The Netherlands; Department of Translational Neuroscience, School of Mental Health and Neuroscience, Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Objectives: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a last-resort treatment for patients with chronic neuropathic pain. The mechanism underlying SCS and pain relief is not yet fully understood. Because the inflammatory balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules in the spinal nociceptive network is pivotal in the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain, the working mechanism of SCS is suggested to be related to the modulation of this balance. Medulloblastoma group 3 and 4 tumors comprise a clinically and biologically significant expression continuum reflecting human cerebellar development.

Cell Rep 2022 Aug;40(5):111162

Wolfson Childhood Cancer Research Centre, Translational and Clinical Research Institute, Newcastle University Centre for Cancer, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Electronic address:

Medulloblastoma is currently subclassified into distinct DNA methylation subgroups/subtypes with particular clinico-molecular features. Using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) in large, well-annotated cohorts of medulloblastoma, we show that transcriptionally group 3 and group 4 medulloblastomas exist as intermediates on a bipolar continuum between archetypal group 3 and group 4 entities. Continuum position is prognostic, reflecting a propensity for specific DNA copy-number changes, and specific switches in isoform/enhancer usage and RNA editing. Read More
