Visceral Leishmaniasis, Northern Somalia, 2013-2019.

Authors:
Mikko K Aalto Temmy Sunyoto Mohamed Ahmed Ali Yusuf Abdiaziz Ahmed Mohamed Gert Van der Auwera Jean-Claude Dujardin

Emerg Infect Dis 2020 01;26(1):153-154

We identified visceral leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania donovani in a previously unknown focus in northern Somalia. Clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of 118 cases during 2013-2019 in Bosaso, the region's commercial capital, have raised suspicion of visceral leishmaniasis endemicity status there.

A case report and literature review: diagnosis and treatment of human immunodeficiency virus coinfected with visceral leishmania by metagenomic next-generation sequencing in China.

Center of Infectious Diseases, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Background: human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can disrupt the body's immune system, increasing the chance of various opportunistic infections. The risk of misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis is high for HIV and coinfection. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has become a significant opportunistic infection in HIV type 1 (HIV-1)-infected patients in the epidemic region. Read More

Leishmaniases are among the most neglected vector-borne diseases, infecting humans as well various animal hosts with clinical outcomes varying from cutaneous disorders to visceral and life-threatening disease. In Algeria, canine leishmaniasis (CanL) caused by Leishmania infantum is endemic mainly throughout the northern regions of the country with the Mediterranean climate that favours the occurrence of Larroussius sand flies, the vectors of the parasite. This study conducted in Bougaa and Kherrata, two regions located in north-eastern Algeria and endemic for CanL, focuses on: i) composition of sand fly fauna, ii) screening of Leishmania parasites and iii) the blood sources of engorged females. Tissue tropism: Is it an intrinsic characteristic of Leishmania species?

Authors:

Acta Trop 2022 May 11:106512. Epub 2022 May 11.

Laboratory of Parasitology and Vector-Borne-Diseases, Institut Pasteur du Maroc, Casablanca, Morocco. Electronic address:

The genus Leishmania comprises a wide range of species, some of which are pathogenic to humans and each of which has a different tissue preference, resulting in one of the three clinical forms of human leishmaniasis: visceral, cutaneous, or mucocutaneous. Although, all pathogenic species are deposited intradermally in the mammalian host upon an infectious sand fly bite, only the viscerotropic strains can leave the skin and reach the internal organs. We assume that Leishmania tissue tropism is not only the result of Leishmania genetic determinism but is also governed by the interaction of the parasite with different vectorial and human host elements.
