J Nutr 2021 Apr;151(4):800-809

Nutrition Research Division, Health Canada, Ottawa, Canada.

Background: While cancer is common, its incidence varies widely by tissue. These differences are attributable to variable risk factors, such as environmental exposure, genetic inheritance, and lifetime number of stem cell divisions in a tissue. Folate deficiency is generally associated with increased risk for colorectal cancer (CRC) and acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Read More

The impairment of cognitive function was considered as a major clinic feature in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Thus, a number of researches related to AD were focused on the changes in brain. However, as a neurodegenerative disorder with systemic inflammation, the periphery organs may also play a key role in AD pathology. Read More

Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica (Bazex syndrome) is a rare paraneoplastic skin condition characterised by acral psoriasiform plaques, with a predilection for the nose, ears, hands and feet. It typically presents before the discovery of an internal malignancy and is often misdiagnosed as an inflammatory dermatitis that does not respond to treatment. Intra-gastrointestinal amyloid-β1-42 oligomers perturb enteric function and induce Alzheimer's disease pathology.

J Physiol 2020 10 6;598(19):4209-4223. Epub 2020 Jul 6.

School of Biomedical Sciences.

Key Points: Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and transgenic mice have beta-amyloid (Aβ) aggregation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is possible that Aβ from the periphery contributes to the load of Aβ in the brain, as Aβ has prion-like properties. The present investigations demonstrate that Aβ injected into the GI tract of ICR mice is internalised into enteric cholinergic neurons; at 1 month, administration of Aβ into the body of the stomach and the proximal colon was observed to partly redistribute to the fundus and jejunum; at 1 year, vagal and cerebral β-amyloidosis was present, and mice exhibited GI dysfunction and cognitive deficits.
