The COVID-19 pandemic has affected African American populations disproportionately with respect to prevalence, and mortality. Expression profiles represent snapshots of combined genetic, socio-environmental (including socioeconomic and environmental factors), and physiological effects on the molecular phenotype. As such, they have potential to improve biological understanding of differences among populations, and provide therapeutic biomarkers and environmental mitigation strategies. Read More

Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV)-associated gastrointestinal diseases usually occur in immunocompromised patients; however, few cases has also been described in healthy hosts despite still unclear pathological mechanisms. CMV esophagitis causes various lesions, such as erythematous mucosa, erosions, and ulcers, although such inflammatory changes can appear in superficial esophageal cancers or in surrounding areas. CMV-associated esophagitis has been also reported in cancer patients, but typically in those with advanced and/or terminal stage cancers secondary to chemoradiotherapy-induced immunosuppression or the physiologic demands of the malignancy itself. CREST (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia) syndrome, also known as the limited cutaneous form of systemic sclerosis (lcSSc), is a multisystem connective tissue disorder often manifesting as a consequence of superimposed autoimmune hepatitis. Herein, we present a case of a 40-year-old female with a past one-year history of hepatitis C presenting with the chief complaints of progressive thickness and tightness of the skin of hands and face and dysphagia for the past three months, along with arthralgia of the hands for the past two months, suggestive of CREST syndrome. Through this case, we intend to emphasize the association between extrahepatic manifestations and the emergence of autoantibodies in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and discuss the clinical relevance of the autoantibodies in extrahepatic disorders, in our case, CREST syndrome. Purpose: TG43 does not account for a lack of scatter and tissue and applicator heterogeneities. The advanced collapsed-cone engine (ACE) algorithm available for use in the Oncentra Brachy treatment planning system (Elekta AB, Stockholm, Sweden) can model these conditions more accurately and is evaluated for esophageal and surface mold brachytherapy treatments. Methods And Materials: ACE was commissioned for use then compared against TG43 for five esophageal and five surface mold treatment plans. To investigate the involvement of supraspinal fatigue in the loss of maximal inspiratory pressure (Pi), we fatigued the inspiratory muscles. Six participants performed 5 sustained maximal isometric inspiratory efforts (15-s contractions, duty cycle ∼75%) which reduced Pi, as measured from esophageal and mouth pressure, to around half of their initial maximums. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) delivered over the motor cortex near the beginning and end of each maximal effort evoked superimposed twitch-like increments in the ongoing Pi, increasing from ∼1.
