Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive incurable neurodegenerative disease of the brain afflicting a third of the population aged 85 and older. Pathologic hallmarks include extracellular plaques of amyloid-beta (Aß), intraneuronal neurofibrillary tangles of hyperphosphorylated tau protein, synaptic destruction, neuronal death, and brain atrophy. Neuroinflammation, mediated by microglia, is a central component of the disease, and is intricately connected with peripheral inflammation. Read More

Keratitis due to Herpes simplex virus (HSK), Varicella-Zoster virus (VZK) and Cytomegalovirus remains a frequent source of concern for many ophthalmologists. They are a frequent cause of emergency consultations at eye care centers and carry the risk of permanent loss of visual acuity or visual quality and/or chronic neurotrophic keratitis, resulting in a significant decrease in the quality of life. HSK and VZK can affect the corneal epithelium, stroma, or endothelium or a combination of layers. Read More

Importance: Current guidelines recommend brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for clinical management of patients with severe herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). However, the prognostic value of brain imaging has not been demonstrated in this setting. Objective: To investigate the association between early brain MRI data and functional outcomes of patients with HSE at 90 days after intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The dynamic nature of interactions between invading viral pathogens and their hosts has fascinated scientists for several decades. The well-known capacity of herpes simplex virus (HSV) to establish life-long infections in humans reflects a dynamic balance between maintaining a latent state in which viral genomes are silenced and re-entry into the lytic phase during reactivation. Silencing of the viral genome has been shown to be a function of innate immune signalling, intrinsic cellular antiviral mechanisms and epigenetic repression. Read More

Introduction: Vaccine development for the disease caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been challenging over the years and is always in dire need of novel approaches for prevention and cure. To date, the HSV disease remains incurable and challenging to prevent. The disease is extremely widespread due to its high infection rate, resulting in millions of infection cases worldwide. Read More
