Bioanalysis 2018 Apr 27;10(7):433-444. Epub 2018 Apr 27.

Worldwide Clinical Trials, Austin, TX, USA.

The 11th Global CRO Council Closed Forum was held in Universal City, CA, USA on 3 April 2017. Representatives from international CRO members offering bioanalytical services were in attendance in order to discuss scientific and regulatory issues specific to bioanalysis. The second CRO-Pharma Scientific Interchange Meeting was held on 7 April 2017, which included Pharma representatives' sharing perspectives on the topics discussed earlier in the week with the CRO members. The issues discussed at the meetings included cumulative stability evaluations, matrix stability evaluations, the 2016 US FDA Immunogenicity Guidance and recent and unexpected FDA Form 483s on immunogenicity assays, the bioanalytical laboratory's role in writing PK sample collection instructions, biosimilars, CRO perspectives on the use of chiral versus achiral methods, hybrid LBA/LCMS assays, applications of fit-for-purpose validation and, at the Global CRO Council Closed Forum only, the status and trend of current regulated bioanalytical practice in China under CFDA's new BMV policy. Conclusions from discussions of these topics at both meetings are included in this report.

Introduction: Maintaining academic integrity is paramount for educators, and even more so for health science educators, where the health of patients is potentially at stake. However, as more content and assessments are pushed into an online forum, more hurdles are being placed in the path of keeping everyone honest without requiring significant financial resources for online proctoring of every assessment. This commentary explores the suggestion of re-evaluating the need for graded course assessments as a way to uphold academic integrity. Read More

The 13th Global CRO Council (GCC) closed forum for bioanalysis was held in New Orleans, LA, USA on 5 April 2019. This GCC meeting was organized to discuss the contents of the 2019 ICH M10 Bioanalytical Method Validation Draft Guideline published in February 2019 and consolidate the feedback of the GCC members. While ICH M10 will cover requirements for reference standards, one of the biggest challenges facing the CRO community is the lack of consistency and completeness of Certificates of Analysis for reference standards used in regulated bioanalysis. The Median Sternotomy: The Unkindest Cut of All? Pearls, Pitfalls, Aphorisms, & Myths.

Curt Tribble Walter Merrill Stephen Derryberry Gene Parrino

Heart Surg Forum 2021 03 25;24(2):E267-E277. Epub 2021 Mar 25.

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Ochsner Medical Center, New Orleans, LA, USA.

While some have claimed that a median sternotomy is an 'unkind cut,' when this incision is performed, closed, and managed optimally, it can be one of the 'most kind cuts' used for major operations. The median sternotomy is the most commonly used incision for coronary artery bypass surgery, which is the most common operation performed in the United States at the current time. This approach is, of course, used for many other cardiac and thoracic operations, as well. Read More

Aim: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) refers to a constellation of bowel symptoms that affect the majority of patients following restorative proctectomy. LARS is associated with poorer quality of life (QoL), and can lead to distress, anxiety and isolation. Peer support could be an important resource for people living with LARS, helping them normalize and validate their experience. Read More

Heart Surg Forum 2021 02 17;24(1):E177-E184. Epub 2021 Feb 17.

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Adiyaman, University School of Medicine, Adiyaman, Turkey.

Background: The aim of this study was to present an extrapleural approach for the closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), with the repair of aortic coarctation (CoA) in the same session, in critically ill newborns and infants as an alternative to the transpleural surgical technique.

Methods: Between December 2007 and November 2010, 44 critically ill patients with PDA and coarctation of the aorta were operated on during the same session with the extrapleural approach. The diagnoses of the patients were made by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). Read More
