Diseases caused by the normally pathogenic fungi Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, and Coccidioides immitis are common but seldom serious. Treatment is usually needed only if respiratory status is compromised, if there is progressive tissue destruction, or if the infection disseminates outside the lungs.
