Statistical methods such as indicators, indexes, scoring systems, and etiology diagrams can be effectively used for establishing the diagnosis, and monitoring the progress of a patient.
A large number of statistical methods are already used for diagnosis and prognosis without even noticing. Time has come to formalize all these into a distinct discipline, and call it statistical medicine.
