J Integr Med 2016 May;14(3):187-96

Ministry of Health, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Riyadh-11662, Saudi Arabia.

Objective: The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is relatively common among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) around the world. Like many other countries, Saudi Arabia has a high incidence of T2DM, and incorporates the use of CAM in its treatment. This study explores the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of CAM therapies among patients with T2DM and explores the relationships between sociodemographics and the KAP of CAM modalities.

Methods: This is a hospital-based, observational, cross-sectional study that selected 302 outpatients with T2DM, from Diabetic Center of King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Hospital, in Riyadh city, in May 2014. Patients were interviewed using a predesigned questionnaire.

Results: The mean age of patients was (51.6 ± 10.6) years and 43.4% of them were males. The prevalence of CAM practices was 30.5%; 30.39% of them used herbs, 20.58% used wet cupping and 17.64% used nutritional supplements and other therapies. The factors found to predict the use of CAM therapies among patients with T2DM were: age above 51 years, unemployment and the participants± knowledge about the effectiveness of CAM products.

Conclusion: This preliminary study estimated the prevalence of CAM use, revealed positive attitude towards CAM and found three significant predictors of CAM use among patients with T2DM, which is consistent with regional data. A community-based research with a larger sample that targets T2DM population is needed in Saudi Arabia.

Empagliflozin is a SGLT2 inhibitor that reduces the concentration of blood glucose by inhibiting glucose reabsorption and promoting glucose excretion. Interestingly, empagliflozin also has some additional benefits, including cardiovascular protection, decreasing uric acid levels and improving NAFLD-related liver injury. However, the specific mechanism by which empagliflozin ameliorates NAFLD-related liver injury, especially how empagliflozin regulates hepatic immune inflammatory responses, is still unknown. Introduction And Objectives: Noninvasive liver assessment in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in a primary care population identifies higher risk non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to evaluate the association of T2DM with liver fibrosis and steatosis by transient elastography (TE).

Materials And Methods: This is a retrospective study of a TE referral program where primary care physicians were able to order TE. Read More

The women of China's Liaoning province display some morbidities in ways that defy medical explanation. Women have higher rates of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and metabolic syndrome than men, an anomaly for all three conditions. Most of these patients also suffer from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) while there was a negative association between being female and T2DM for the rest of China. Read More

Background: Medication adherence measures are often dichotomized to classify patients into those with good or poor adherence using a cut-off value ⩾80%, but this cut-off may not be universal across diseases or medication classes. This study aimed to examine the cut-off value that optimally distinguish good and poor adherence by using the medication possession ratio (MPR) and proportion of days covered (PDC) as adherence measures and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) as outcome measure among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.

Method: We used pharmacy dispensing data of 1461 eligible T2DM patients from public primary care clinics in Malaysia treated with oral antidiabetic drugs between January 2018 and May 2019. Read More

Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have an intricate bidirectional relationship. Individuals with T2DM, not only have a higher prevalence of non-alcoholic steatosis, but also carry a higher risk of progression to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Experts still differ in their recommendations of screening for NAFLD among patients with T2DM. Read More
