Tropical countries are highly prone to infectious diseases such as the one caused by zika virus. Infection by zika is clinically and epidemiologically highly relevant. For example, when women are infected by zika during the first trimester of pregnancy, the child incurs a high risk of microcephaly and acute neurological syndromes. Read More

Infection with the Zika virus (ZIKV) is an ongoing problem especially as accurate, cost-effective testing remains unresolved. In addition, coinfection occurs with both the Dengue virus (DENV) and ZIKV which leads to cross-reactivity between the flaviviruses and can result in false positives and inaccurate testing. This supports the current need for a simple assay that can detect Zika antibodies sensitively that at the same time can differentiate between cross-reactive antibodies. Read More

The recommended test guidelines for Zika virus (ZIKV) include using both molecular and serological tools. While the molecular tools are useful for detecting acute infection, the serological tools are useful for the detection of previous infections. Nevertheless, detection of ZIKV-specific antibodies remains a challenge due to the high cross-reactivity between ZIKV and other flaviviruses such as dengue virus (DENV) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). An emergent positive-stranded RNA virus, transmitted by mosquitoes with its first case of vertical transmission confirmed in 2015 in Brazil. The Zika virus (ZIKV) fever has received particular attention, mainly related to neurological diseases such as microcephaly in newborns. However, the laboratory diagnosis for ZIKV still faces some challenges due to its cross-reactivity with other flaviviruses, requiring a correct and differential diagnosis, contributing to the good prognosis of patients, especially in pregnant women. Introduction: Yellow fever (YF) is a public health threat with frequent outbreaks in tropical and subtropical areas, despite the existence of safe and effective vaccine. The diagnosis of acute infection of the etiologic agent relies mainly in real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-qPCR)-based assays.Objetives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare this novel protocol for yellow fever virus (YFV) diagnosis against assays developed in house by reference laboratories for arboviruses.
