Background: Arteriolosclerotic ulcers of Martorell are histologically characterized by hyaline arteriolosclerosis resulting in concentric occlusion of the arteriolar lumina. Although several authors have previously reported on hyaline changes in hypertensive arteriolopathies, so far, little information is available on the molecular composition of hyaline wall depositions. Objectives: This study aimed at the molecular characterization of hyaline arteriolar deposits in patients with hypertensive arteriolopathy using confocal Raman spectroscopy. Chronic wounds, including leg ulcers, constitute an important medical problem among older patients. Dystrophic calcifications (DC) are associated with a variety of disorders, including leg ulcers. The aim of this study was to report the clinical and biological characteristics of older patients with DC in leg ulcers and to determine the morphology and chemical composition of these calcifications. Aim: Venous leg ulcers are lower limb skin ulcers characterised by a cycle of healing and recurrence due to underlying chronic venous insufficiency. While compression improves healing outcomes, many ulcers do not heal. As a daily 300 mg oral dose of aspirin in conjunction with compression may improve healing outcomes, we investigated the effect of adjuvant aspirin on venous leg ulcer healing in participants already receiving compression. We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with a painful expanding ulcer on the left leg of 2 months' duration that initially was diagnosed as a skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) with plans for surgical debridement. Upon dermatologic consultation, surgery was canceled due to the possible diagnosis of pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) and risk of pathergy. Notable features of this patient included a history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), poor response to antibiotics, chronicity, lack of signs of sepsis, potential complications of surgical intervention, and ultimately a response to immunosuppressive agents. Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of vacuum-assisted closure therapy on venous stasis wound healing in patients with chronic venous leg ulcers. Methods: Vacuum-assisted closure therapy was applied on a total of 14 venous leg ulcers. All patients had post-thrombotic syndrome. Read More
