We combine theoretical and experimental efforts to propose a method for studying energy fluctuations, in particular, to obtain the related bistochastic matrix of transition probabilities by means of simple measurements at the end of a protocol that drives a many-body quantum system out of equilibrium. This scheme is integrated with numerical optimizations in order to ensure a proper analysis of the experimental data, leading to physical probabilities. The method is experimentally evaluated employing a two interacting spin-1/2 system in a nuclear magnetic resonance setup. Read More

Microbial growth and fluctuations in environmental conditions have been shown to cause microbial contamination and deterioration of food. Thus, it is paramount to develop reliable strategies to effectively prevent the sale and consumption of contaminated or spoiled food. Responsive packaging systems are designed to react to specific stimuli in the food or environment, such as microorganisms or temperature, then implement an informational or corrective response. This paper explores the complex nexus between the global oil prices and the food prices of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region during the period 2000-2020. Both linear and nonlinear models of the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach are adapted into panel data form to investigate the symmetrical and asymmetrical influence of oil prices on food prices. The key results are summarized: (i) the long-term effect of oil prices on food prices is significantly positive including both oil-exporting and oil-importing nations. Read More

The concentration and isotopic composition of uranium (δU, U/U activity ratio) in combination with traditional isotopes (δO, δC) were examined as potential tracers of authigenic carbonate formation in a karst aquifer. The U concentration and U/U activity ratios in the tufa-precipitating sections of two connected karst rivers (Krka and Zrmanja, Croatia) decreased downstream in water and in precipitated carbonate due to active self-purification processes, i.e. Read More

α-RuCl is a major candidate for the realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, but its zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures indicates deviations from the Kitaev model. We have quantified the spin Hamiltonian of α-RuCl by a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the Ru L absorption edge. In the paramagnetic state, the quasi-elastic intensity of magnetic excitations has a broad maximum around the zone center without any local maxima at the zigzag magnetic Bragg wavevectors. Read More
