Financial barriers are a key limitation to accessing health services, such as tuberculosis (TB) care in resource-poor settings. In Ghana, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), established in 2003, officially offers free TB care to those enrolled. Using data from the first Ghana's national TB patient cost survey, we address two key questions 1) what are the key determinants of costs and affordability for TB-affected households, and 2) what would be the impact on costs for TB-affected households of expanding NHIS to all TB patients? We reported the level of direct and indirect costs, the proportion of TB-affected households experiencing catastrophic costs (defined as total TB-related costs, i. Read More

Introduction: Hydroxychloroquine use in COVID-19 patients was widespread and uncontrolled until recently. Patients vulnerable to severe COVID-19 are at risk for hydroxychloroquine interactions with comorbidities and co-medications contributing to detrimental, including fatal adverse treatment effects. Methods: This is a retrospective survey of health conditions and co-medications of COVID-19 patients who were pre-screened for enrolment into a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled hydroxychloroquine multicenter trial. Introduction: Seasonal influenza is a major global health problem causing substantial morbidity and health care costs. Yet, in many countries, the rates of influenza vaccination remain low. Chronic kidney or liver diseases (CKLD) predispose patients to severe influenza infections, but data on vaccination acceptance and status is limited in this risk population. Read More

Background: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), continues to remain a global challenge. There is emerging evidence of SARS-CoV-2 virus found in the blood of patients from China and some developed countries. However, there is inadequate data reported in Ghana and other parts of Africa, where blood transfusion service heavily relies on voluntary and replacement blood donors. Read More

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is one of the most common and serious fungal diseases of the tree Mangifera persiciforma. Yet we lack an effective method to evaluate this ecological interaction accurately. Here, we measured the functional traits and leaf reflectance spectrum of the host plants under different disease degrees. Read More
