Dept. of Stomatology, The First Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang 050031, China.

Objective: To explore the influence of conventional metal materials in oral cavity on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Methods: Four kinds of metal materials (metal ligature wire, forging hard and slotless denture, casting nichrome denture, casting copper alloy denture) in oral cavity were scanned through MRI. FSE sequence T1 weighted imaging (FSE T1), EPI diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequence of ordinary, Propeller DWI imaging were used.

Results: In FSE T1 sequence, metal ligature wire and forging hard and slotless denture produced serious false image, casting nichrome denture produced moderate false image, casting copper alloy denture produced only little false image. In EPI DWI sequence, obvious magnetic-sensitive false image were produced in the dissection tissue of the brain by metal ligature wire. While in Propeller DWI sequence, magnetic-sensitive false image were greatly reduced and satisfactory images were formed.

Conclusion: Different metal materials in oral cavity have different influence on the MRI. The false images produced by different metal materials are closely related to the type of the material. Magnetic-sensitive false images can be eliminated by Propeller DWI technique.

The pattern of digestive tract reconstruction in radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer is still inconclusive. This study aims to compare mid-term and long-term quality of life after radical gastrectomy for distal gastric cancer between Billroth-I (B-I) and Billroth-II (B-II) reconstruction. A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Read More

Infrared Small Target Detection Based on Weighted Local Coefficient of Variation Measure.

Authors:
Junmin Rao Jing Mu Fanming Li Shijian Liu

Sensors (Basel) 2022 May 2;22(9). Epub 2022 May 2.

Key Laboratory of Infrared System Detection and Imaging Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai 200083, China.

Robust infrared (IR) small target detection is critical for infrared search and track (IRST) systems and is a challenging task for complicated backgrounds. Current algorithms have poor performance on complex backgrounds, and there is a high false alarm rate or even missed detection. To address this problem, a weighted local coefficient of variation (WLCV) is proposed for IR small target detection. Read More

Artificial intelligence algorithms utilizing deep learning are helpful tools for diagnostic imaging. A deep learning-based automatic detection algorithm was developed for rib fractures on computed tomography (CT) images of high-energy trauma patients. In this study, the clinical effectiveness of this algorithm was evaluated. Read More

PLoS Comput Biol 2022 May 19;18(5):e1009666. Epub 2022 May 19.

Biosciences Institute, Newcastle University, Newcastle, United Kingdom.

We present a simple model which can account for the stereoscopic sensitivity of praying mantis predatory strikes. The model consists of a single "disparity sensor": a binocular neuron sensitive to stereoscopic disparity and thus to distance from the animal. The model is based closely on the known behavioural and neurophysiological properties of mantis stereopsis. Read More

J Nucl Cardiol 2022 May 16. Epub 2022 May 16.

Division of Cardiology, Cook County Health, Chicago, IL, USA.

Background: Pyrophosphate (PYP) imaging has a high diagnostic accuracy for transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA). Indeterminate findings are often reported due to persistent blood pool activity, presumed to be from low cardiac output. We evaluated the relationship between blood pool activity on PYP imaging and echocardiographic indices of cardiac function. Read More
