Dental implants to rehabilitate a patient with an unrepaired complete cleft of the hard and soft palate: a clinical report.

Authors:
J W Harrison

Cleft Palate Craniofac J 1992 Sep;29(5):485-8

Department of Continuing Education, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, PA.

Prosthetic rehabilitation of an edentulous adult with a complete residual cleft of his palates is presented. Lack of retention of his prosthesis made speech and eating difficult. Four osseointegrated dental implants were used to join the right and left maxillae and to provide mechanical retention for a complete overdenture obturator to improve function.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Universitätsklinikum Schleswig Holstein, Christian Albrechts University, Campus Kiel, Arnold-Heller-Straße 3, 24105, Kiel, Germany.

The aim of the current study was to document the long-term clinical results of the use of two prosthetic techniques for the rehabilitation of completely edentulous maxillae according to the "All-on-Four" concept: Fixed, screw-retained prosthesis mounted on a chrome-molybdenum framework with (1) metal-ceramic veneers and (2) Acrylic prosthesis with acrylic resin prosthetic teeth. A total of 34 patients were assigned to subgroups according to their own preference of the superstructure type (ceramics [n: 17] or acrylic resin [n: 17]). Prosthetic complications, marginal bone loss, plaque accumulation, bleeding on probing, bite force and oral-health-related quality of life were assessed over a period of 6 years. Read More

Materials used for dental crowns show a wide range of variety, and a dentist's choice can depend on several factors such as patient desires, esthetics, tooth factors, etc. One of the most important issues for implant surgery is the primary stability and it should be provided to minimize the risks of screw loosening, failed osseointegration, or nonunion. The current study aims to present the Finite Element Analysis (FEA)-based material selection strategy for a dental crown in terms of reducing the aforementioned risks of dental implants. Read More

Statement Of Problem: In the implant digital workflow, scan bodies provide the 3D position of digital implants in the virtual dental arch. However, limited evidence is available on scan body accuracy, selection, and usage.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the 3D positional accuracy of 4 intraoral and 6 laboratory scan body systems to the implants and laboratory replicas of an implant system under various torque magnitudes. Read More

Comparative study of the accuracy of an implant intraoral scanner and that of a conventional intraoral scanner for complete-arch fixed dental prostheses.

Associate Professor, Department of Conservative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, School of Dentistry, Complutense University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain; Head of Postgraduate Specialist Programme in Advanced Implant-Prosthodontics, Complutense University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain.

Statement Of Problem: Most of the available digital systems are designed to image teeth and soft tissue rather than dental implants. However, although some are marketed specifically to record implant position, whether these products are better for implant scanning is unclear.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the accuracy of an implant intraoral scanner (PiC camera) with that of an intraoral scanner (TRIOS3) for 6 implants placed in completely edentulous arches. Read More

Bone 2021 Apr 6:115942. Epub 2021 Apr 6.

Department of Applied Prosthodontics, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Nagasaki University, Nagasaki 852-8588, Japan.

Dental implant treatment in patients prescribed medications is associated with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) around the implants. However, there is no scientific information on how bisphosphonate and/or steroid therapies affect wound healing around implants after implant placement. The aim of this study was to histopathologically and immunopathologically investigate the effects of bisphosphonate and/or steroid therapy on the early stages of soft and hard tissue wound healing around implants in rat maxillae.
