Jet Propulsion Laboratory California Institute of Technology Pasadena CA USA.

We introduce and evaluate an approach for the simultaneous retrieval of aerosol and surface properties from Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer Classic (AVIRIS-C) data collected during wildfires. The joint National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality field campaign took place in August 2019, and involved two aircraft and coordinated ground-based observations. The AVIRIS-C instrument acquired data from onboard NASA's high altitude ER-2 research aircraft, coincident in space and time with aerosol observations obtained from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) DRAGON mobile platform in the smoke plume downwind of the Williams Flats Fire in northern Washington in August 2019. Geophys Res Lett 2022 Jun 31;49(11):e2022GL098078. Epub 2022 May 31.

Clemson University Clemson SC USA.

We present simultaneous, independent measurements of the atmospheric semidiurnal lunar tide in neutral winds and plasma velocities from NASA's Ionospheric Connection Explorer, and in atomic oxygen 135.6 nm airglow measured by the Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk. Westward tidal winds near 115 km at the magnetic equator occur during part of the upward phase of the in-situ plasma drift. Read More

Improving the Usability of Galileo and Voyager Images of Jupiter's Moon Europa.

Authors:
Michael T Bland Lynn A Weller Brent A Archinal Ethan Smith Benjamin H Wheeler

Earth Space Sci 2021 Dec 2;8(12):e2021EA001935. Epub 2021 Dec 2.

Astrogeology Science Center U. S. Geological Survey Flagstaff AZ USA.

NASA's Voyager 1, Voyager 2, and Galileo spacecraft acquired hundreds of images of Jupiter's moon Europa. These images provide the only moderate- to high-resolution views of the moon's surface and are therefore a critical resource for scientific analysis and future mission planning. Unfortunately, uncertain knowledge of the spacecraft's position and pointing during image acquisition resulted in significant errors in the location of the images on the surface. Read More

Modeling ocean surface chlorophyll-a concentration from ocean color remote sensing reflectance in global waters using machine learning.

Authors:
Srinivas Kolluru Surya Prakash Tiwari

Sci Total Environ 2022 Jul 7:157191. Epub 2022 Jul 7.

Applied Research Center for Environment and Marine Studies, The Research Institute, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran 31261, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

The spatial and temporal variations of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in clear and coastal waters are critical for assessing the health of the marine environment. Machine learning models have been proven to model complex relationships and provide better accuracy estimates of the derived parameters compared to traditional empirical models. The present study proposes a novel approach to derive Chl-a by using multi-layer perceptron Neural Network (MLPNN) with Resilient backpropagation method based on the four ocean color bands existent in most of the ocean color sensors. Using satellite images of nighttime lights to predict the economic impact of COVID-19 in India.

Nataraj Dasgupta

Adv Space Res 2022 Aug 24;70(4):863-879. Epub 2022 May 24.

Imperial College Business School, Imperial College London, London SW7 2BU, UK.

The outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020 heralded a deep global recession not seen since the Second World War. With entire nations in lockdown, burgeoning economies of countries like India plunged into a downward spiral. The conventional instruments of estimating the short-term economic impact of a pandemic is limited, and as a result, it is challenging to implement timely monetary policies to mitigate the financial impact of such unforeseen events.
