The composition of human milk is subject to considerable variation, but the effects of maternal stress are largely unknown. We studied differences in human milk metabolome between Finnish mothers (n = 120, secretors) with symptoms of prenatal symptoms of psychological distress and milk cortisol concentrations. Human milk samples acquired at 2. Read More

The transfer of maternal antibodies to offspring can effectively protect against avian influenza virus (AIV) infection during early life in chickens and can prevent AIV spread by decreasing the overall percentage of the avian population susceptible to this pathogen. Herein, we evaluated maternal antibody transfer dynamics in whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus), which represent an important AIV host species. In total, 57 eggs from 19 nests were collected to study the relationship between egg yolk AIV-specific antibody concentrations and factors including egg size, laying order, maternal serum AIV antibody titer, and maternal body condition. Serotonin plays a diverse role in maternal and mammary metabolism. Recent research in the dairy cow has shown a relationship between serotonin and calcium, with increased serotonin concentrations improving calcium homeostasis in the peri-partum dairy cow. Therefore, the objective was to elucidate how administration of 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan (5-HTP), the immediate precursor to serotonin, altered serotonin and calcium metabolism in lactating dairy cows. Background: Although acetaminophen is commonly used in pregnancy, it can deplete glutathione concentrations and cause accumulation of 5-oxoproline, with subsequent metabolic acidosis.Case: A malnourished 25-year-old woman, G2P1001, with chronic acetaminophen use presented with abdominal pain and high anion gap metabolic acidosis. After ruling out other potential causes, her urine 5-oxoproline level was found to be elevated. Read More

During pregnancy, the vaginal microbiome plays an important role in both maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Throughout pregnancy, the vaginal microbial composition undergoes significant changes, including a decrease in overall diversity and enrichment with Lactobacillus spp. In turn, the modifications in the microbial profiles are associated with shifts in the composition of vaginal metabolites.
