Int J Biol Macromol 2022 May 13. Epub 2022 May 13.

State Key Laboratory of Bio-Fibers and Eco-textiles (Qingdao University), Qingdao 266071, PR China. Electronic address:

An in-situ compatibilized starch (St) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite spinning solution was designed by preparing starch-graft-polyacrylonitrile (St-g-PAN) through graft copolymerizing acrylonitrile from soluble starch and using ammonium cerium nitrate (CAN) as initiator. As dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was used as the solvent, St/St-g-PAN/PAN/DMSO spinning solution was prepared and St/St-g-PAN/PAN composite fibers were obtained by dry-wet spinning technique. The effects of air gap, coagulation bath, hot drawing and stretching, and thermal-setting process were studied in detail. Read More

From Powders to Single Crystals: A Crystallographer's Toolbox for Small-Molecule Structure Determination.

Authors:
Justin A Newman Luca Iuzzolino Melissa Tan Peter Orth Jessica Bruhn Alfred Y Lee

Mol Pharm 2022 May 16. Epub 2022 May 16.

Department of Analytical Research and Development, Merck & Co., Inc., 126 East Lincoln Avenue, Rahway, New Jersey 07065, United States.

Although the crystal structures of small-molecule compounds are often determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction (scXRD), recent advances in three-dimensional electron diffraction (3DED) and crystal structure prediction (CSP) methods promise to expand the structure elucidation toolbox available to the crystallographer. Herein, a comparative assessment of scXRD, 3DED, and CSP in combination with powder X-ray diffraction is carried out on two former drug candidate compounds and a multicomponent crystal of a key building block in the synthesis of gefapixant citrate. SignificanceGrowing high-quality protein crystals is a prerequisite for the structure analysis of proteins by X-ray diffraction. However, dislocation-free perfect protein crystals such as silicon and diamond are limited to two kinds of protein crystals. We wonder whether other high-quality or dislocation-free protein crystals still exhibit some imperfection. Read More

Adsorptive removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous streams using photocatalytic CuBTC/ZnO chitosan composites.

Authors:
Shreyas S Dindorkar Raj Vardhan Patel Anshul Yadav

Water Sci Technol 2022 May;85(9):2748-2760

Membrane Science and Separation Technology Division, CSIR-Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar 364002, India E-mail:

In this study, a CuBTC/ZnO chitosan composite was synthesized for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous streams. Characterization techniques, namely, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric techniques, were used to characterize CuBTC, ZnO, and CuBTC/ZnO chitosan composites. The scanning electron microscopy images revealed the rough and porous structures of the CuBTC/ZnO chitosan composite. Read More
