The present study evaluates the precision of outlying percentile estimates, with age- and sex-associated variations and facilitates decisions needed to revise the current NCHS 1977 Growth Charts with regard to 1) the inclusion of 3(rd) and 97(th) percentiles and 2) the selection of survey data for the construction of the revised growth charts. Simulation was performed to obtain data with distribution characteristics similar to those of The Third National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES III) (1988-1991) data. Objective: To develop new, nationally representative equations to predict stature for racial/ethnic groups of the elderly population in the United States.

Design: Anthropometric data for stature, knee height, and sitting height for adults aged 60 years or older were collected from a sample of persons in the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994), a national probability sample of the US population.

Subjects: A gender- and racial/ethnic-stratified sample of 4,750 persons from the US population (1,369 non-Hispanic white men, 1,472 non-Hispanic white women, 474 non-Hispanic black men, 481 non-Hispanic black women, 497 Mexican-American men, 457 Mexican-American women) aged 60 years or older participated in this study. Height and weight data from the Mexican-American portion of the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES) are shown for children of ages 2 to 17 years and compared with data for non-Hispanic white children from the second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reference curves. Differences in stature between the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the reference populations were minor prior to adolescence and could be entirely attributed to the greater poverty of Mexican-Americans. However, differences increased during adolescence (ie, median stature was less than the 25th percentile of the NCHS reference population at 17 years of age) and, in contrast with earlier ages, were independent of poverty.
