Introduction

Padma P. Tadi Uppala, PhD., MPH, is a Professor in Environmental Health and the Program Director for Undergraduate Public Health at Andrews University in Michigan. Uppala earned her Ph.D. in Biology with a primary focus on environmental carcinogenesis and dietary cancer prevention from Loma Linda University and obtained postdoctoral training in Environmental Toxicology at the University of California, Riverside. Uppala’s research investigates the contribution of environmental factors to breast cancer and dietary cancer prevention. Other areas of research emphasis are serum proteomics, early detection and prevention of the disease through dietary and lifestyle modifications. She has extensively studied the cancer preventive properties of active ingredients in garlic, soybeans and tomatoes. She has authored and co-authored several scientific publications in the area of diet and cancer prevention. Uppala has received several competitive awards, including the American Association for Cancer Research/HBCU Faculty Scholar Award in Cancer Research, Deans Award for Doctoral Programs at Loma Linda University, The Thomas and Violet Zapara Excellence in Teaching Award by the General Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists, and the Susan G Komen for the Cure Mission Award.
