U-shaped association between dietary calcium density intake during adolescence and hypertension in adulthood- a 20-y longitudinal nationwide study in China.

Background And Aims: We assessed longitudinal association between calcium intake during adolescence and hypertension in adulthood.

Methods And Results: Longitudinal study data of 1611 participants from the China Health and Nutrition Survey during 1991-2011 were used. On average they were followed for 11.4 years. Dietary calcium intake during adolescence was assessed based on three 24-hour dietary recalls collected in each visit/survey between 1991 and 2009 (seven waves). The intake was recoded into quartiles. Cumulative mean±SD calcium intake was 199.9±144.8 mg/1000 kcal/day during adolescence. In total 102 participants had hypertension in adulthood (97 men and 5 women). There was a clear U-shaped association between adolescence calcium intake quartiles and adulthood hypertension: across the quartiles, hypertension prevalence was 6.7%, 4.0%, 5.2% and 9.5%, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounders including weight status and dietary pattern, odds ratios (OR, 95%CI) for hypertension were 2.32 (95%CI 1.07-5.00) for lowest quartile, 1.00 (reference), 1.34 (95%CI 0.61-2.97), and 3.10 (95%CI 1.49-6.46) across the quartiles.

Conclusions: Lower or higher calcium intake during adolescence was associated with hypertension in adulthood independent of weight status and dietary pattern.

The lower threshold of hypothermic oxygen delivery to prevent neonatal acute kidney injury.

Background: Oxygen delivery during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is closely related to postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). The value of critical indexed oxygen delivery (DOi) is a key indicator to reflect oxygen supply in cardiovascular surgery. However, the target DOi value for neonates undergoing hypothermic CPB remains unclear.

Methods: One hundred and twenty-six consecutive newborns (≤28 days) undergoing arterial switch operations were retrospectively divided into two groups according to AKI occurrence. Baseline characteristics, intraoperative variables, and clinical outcomes were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and receiver-operating characteristic curve were performed to investigate the association between DOi and AKI.

Results: Neonates in the no-AKI group (n = 67) had significantly higher nadir bypass flow and DOi during the hypothermic phase compared with the AKI group (n = 59). AKI group had remarkably higher incidences of hepatic dysfunction and peritoneal dialysis requirement compared with newborns without AKI. Mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO) was comparable between the two groups. Base excess (BE)(P = 0.011) value during the hypothermic phase of the AKI group was higher than the no-AKI group. Multivariate analysis showed that hypothermic DOi was negatively associated with AKI. The cut-off value of hypothermic DOi was 269 mL min m.

Conclusions: The importance of hypothermic DOi should be highlighted, even when SvO was satisfactory. A lower threshold of DOi > 269 mL min m may help protect neonates from the risk of postoperative AKI.

Impact: The key message of our article is that the lower threshold of DOi > 269 mL min m may help protect neonates from the risk of AKI after on-pump hypothermic cardiovascular surgery. The critical DOi value for neonates undergoing hypothermic CPB remains unclear, and our study may add new evidence for this matter based on the 6-year experience of our center. In this study, the lowest critical value of DOi in neonatal hypothermic CPB is determined for the first time, which provides a reference for intra-CPB management strategy to improve the postoperative outcomes of newborns.

A performance analysis framework for carbon emission quota allocation schemes in China: Perspectives from economics and energy conservation.

Carbon emission quota allocation plays a critical role in carbon emission reduction in an efficient and economic manner. However, the scientific assessment of carbon quota allocation schemes and thus making a reasonable decision depending on preference still confuses relevant decision makers. This study proposes a performance analysis framework for carbon quota allocation schemes by using a nonparametric frontier analysis approach from the perspectives of economic growth and energy conservation. Then, we apply this approach to evaluate the relative economic and energy conservation performances of 15 allocation schemes by reallocating the 2015 Chinese provincial carbon emission quotas, each of which is constructed via a combination of equity, grandfathering, efficiency and ability to pay principles. The results show that the proposed allocation scheme that integrates efficiency and the ability to pay principles is the best option, realizing approximately 6.78% outputs increase and 3.01% energy conservation relative to the actual 2015 emission scenario. We also show that the best scheme is linked to total quotas; the scheme considering only the equity principle is superior to others, while the total quotas are reduced by 10%. The study provides not only a theoretical tool, but also empirical evidence for the construction of China's carbon quota allocation scheme.

Harnessing microbial wealth for lignocellulose biomass valorization through secretomics: a review.

The recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass is a major constraint to its high-value use at industrial scale. In nature, microbes play a crucial role in biomass degradation, nutrient recycling and ecosystem functioning. Therefore, the use of microbes is an attractive way to transform biomass to produce clean energy and high-value compounds. The microbial degradation of lignocelluloses is a complex process which is dependent upon multiple secreted enzymes and their synergistic activities. The availability of the cutting edge proteomics and highly sensitive mass spectrometry tools make possible for researchers to probe the secretome of microbes and microbial consortia grown on different lignocelluloses for the identification of hydrolytic enzymes of industrial interest and their substrate-dependent expression. This review summarizes the role of secretomics in identifying enzymes involved in lignocelluloses deconstruction, the development of enzyme cocktails and the construction of synthetic microbial consortia for biomass valorization, providing our perspectives to address the current challenges.

The burden of hand, foot, and mouth disease among children under different vaccination scenarios in China: a dynamic modelling study.

Background: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common illness in young children. A monovalent vaccine has been developed in China protecting against enterovirus-71, bivalent vaccines preventing HFMD caused by two viruses are under development.

Objective: To predict and compare the incidence of HFMD under different vaccination scenarios in China.

Methods: We developed a compartmental model to capture enterovirus transmission and the natural history of HFMD in children aged 0-5, and calibrated to reported cases in the same age-group from 2015 to 2018. We compared the following vaccination scenarios: different combinations of monovalent and bivalent vaccine; a program of constant vaccination to that of pulse vaccination prior to seasonal outbreaks.

Results: We estimate 1,982,819, 2,258,846, 1,948,522 and 2,398,566 cases from 2015 to 2018. Increased coverage of monovalent vaccine from 0 to 80% is predicted to decrease the cases by 797,262 (49.1%). Use of bivalent vaccine at an 80% coverage level would decrease the cases by 828,560. Use of a 2.0× pulse vaccination for the bivalent vaccine in addition to 80% coverage would reduce cases by over one million. The estimated R for HFMD in 2015-2018 was 1.08, 1.10, 1.35 and 1.17.

Conclusions: Our results point to the benefit of bivalent vaccine and using a pulse vaccination in specific months over routine vaccination. Other ways to control HFMD include isolation of patients in the early stage of dissemination, more frequent hand-washing and ventilation, and better treatment options for patients.

The whole complete mitochondrial genome of was 17,956 bp in length, with 37 genes, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs. The GC content of was 39.43%. The genomic structure and gene arrangement were identical to those of Caridea species. The phylogenetic analysis of 13 protein-coding genes showed a close relationship to the genera .

Effects of Fermented Milk Containing Strain Shirota on Constipation in Patients with Depression: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

Probiotics have been shown to benefit patients with constipation and depression, but whether they specifically alleviate constipation in patients with depression remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of strain Shirota (LcS), formerly strain Shirota, on constipation in patients with depression with specific etiology and gut microbiota and on depressive regimens. Eighty-two patients with constipation were recruited. The subjects consumed 100 mL of a LcS beverage (10 CFU/mL) or placebo every day for 9 weeks. After ingesting beverages for this period, we observed no significant differences in the total patient constipation-symptom (PAC-SYM) scores in the LcS group when compared with the placebo group. However, symptoms/scores in item 7 (rectal tearing or bleeding after a bowel movement) and items 8-12 (stool symptom subscale) were more alleviated in the LcS group than in the placebo group. The Beck Depression Index (BDI) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores were all significantly decreased, and the degree of depression was significantly improved in both the placebo and LcS groups ( < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between the groups. The LcS intervention increased the beneficial , and levels and decreased the bacterial levels related to mental illness, such as , and Additionally, the interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels were significantly decreased in both the placebo and LcS groups ( < 0.05). In particular, the IL-6 levels were significantly lower in the LcS group than the placebo group after the ingestion period ( < 0.05). In conclusion, the daily consumption of LcS for 9 weeks appeared to relieve constipation and improve the potentially depressive symptoms in patients with depression and significantly decrease the IL-6 levels. In addition, the LcS supplementation also appeared to regulate the intestinal microbiota related to mental illness.

Modulation of α7nAchR by Melatonin Alleviates Ischemia and Reperfusion-Compromised Integrity of Blood-Brain Barrier Through Inhibiting HMGB1-Mediated Microglia Activation and CRTC1-Mediated Neuronal Loss.

The only food and drug administration (FDA)-approved drug currently available for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke is tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), yet the therapeutic benefits of this drug are partially outweighed by the increased risk of hemorrhagic transformation (HT). Analysis of the NIH trial has shown that cigarette smoking protected tPA-treated patients from HT; however, the underlying mechanism is not clear. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) has shown anti-inflammatory effect and modulation nAChR could be a strategy to reduce ischemia/reperfusion-induced blood-brain barrier (BBB) damage. Since melatonin could regulate the expression of α7nAchR and melatonin's neuroprotective effect against ischemic injury is mediated via α7nAChR modulation, here, we aim to test the hypothesis that melatonin reduces ischemia and reperfusion (I/R)-induced BBB damage through modulation of α7nACh receptor (α7nAChR). Mice were subjected to 1.5 h ischemia and 24 h reperfusion and at the onset of reperfusion, mice received intraperitoneal administration (i.p.) of either drug or saline. Mice were randomly assigned into five groups: Saline; α7nAChR agonist PNU282987; Melatonin; Melatonin+Methyllycaconitine (MLA, α7nAChR antagonist), and MLA group. BBB permeability was assessed by detecting the extravasation of Evan's blue and IgG. Our results showed that I/R significantly increased BBB permeability accompanied by occludin degradation, microglia activation, and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) release from the neuron. In addition, I/R significantly induced neuronal loss accompanied by the decrease of CREB-regulated transcriptional coactivator 1 (CRTC1) and p-CREB expression. Melatonin treatment significantly inhibited the above changes through modulating α7nAChR. Taken together, these results demonstrate that melatonin provides a protective effect on ischemia/reperfusion-induced BBB damage, at least in part, depending on the modulation of α7nAChR.

Prevalence of mental health problems among children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the prevalence of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and posttraumatic stress symptoms among children and adolescents during global COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 to 2020, and the potential modifying effects of age and gender.

Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and two Chinese academic databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang) for studies published from December 2019 to September 2020 that reported the prevalence of above mental health problems among children and adolescents. Random-effects meta-analyses were used to estimate the pooled prevalence.

Results: Twenty-three studies (21 cross-sectional studies and 2 longitudinal studies) from two countries (i.e., China and Turkey) with 57,927 children and adolescents were identified. Depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and posttraumatic stress symptoms were assessed in 12, 13, 2, and 2 studies, respectively. Meta-analysis of results from these studies showed that the pooled prevalence of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and posttraumatic stress symptoms were 29% (95%CI: 17%, 40%), 26% (95%CI: 16%, 35%), 44% (95%CI: 21%, 68%), and 48% (95%CI: -0.25, 1.21), respectively. The subgroup meta-analysis revealed that adolescents and females exhibited higher prevalence of depression and anxiety compared to children and males, respectively.

Limitations: All studies in meta-analysis were from China limited the generalizability of our findings.

Conclusions: Early evidence highlights the high prevalence of mental health problems among children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially among female and adolescents. Studies investigating the mental health of children and adolescents from countries other than China are urgently needed.

Effect of Osteoporosis on Adjacent Segmental Degeneration After Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Under Whole Body Vibration.

Background: Adjacent segmental degeneration (ASD) is one of the common complications after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). Both whole body vibration (WBV) and osteoporosis are important factors associated with the biomechanics of the lumbar spine. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated the effects of osteoporosis on ASD after PLIF under WBV.

Methods: In the present study, using one normal model, one PLIF model and one PLIF with osteoporosis model of the L1-S1 segment were developed. A 5-Hz, 40-N sinusoidal vertical load was imposed on the superior surface of L1 of each model to simulate WBV, and the dynamic responses and maximal values of intradiscal pressure, shear stress on annulus fibrosus, total deformation, and disc bulge were evaluated in the L1-L2, L2-L3, L3-L4, and L5-S1 segments.

Results: At the L1-L2, L2-L3, and L3-L4 levels, the differences in the dynamic responses and maximal values in intradiscal pressure, shear stress, total deformation, and disc bulge between the PLIF and PLIF with osteoporosis models were slight. However, at the L5-S1 level, the dynamic response curves and maximal intradiscal pressure, shear stress, and disc bulge values in the PLIF with osteoporosis model were significantly lower than those in the PLIF model.

Conclusions: Osteoporosis can mitigate the development of ASD in the lower adjacent segment but has no obvious influence on the upper adjacent segments during WBV.

Lactoferrin Is a Potential Activator of the Vitamin D Receptor in Its Regulation of Osteogenic Activities in C57BL/6J Mice and MC3T3-E1 Cells.

Background: Lactoferrin (LF) has been shown to promote bone anabolism, and the vitamin D receptor (VDR) mediates the effects of vitamin D on bone. We hypothesized that LF improves bone health by increasing VDR expression.

Objectives: We sought to determine the role of VDR activation in LF-induced osteogenic activity in vivo and in vitro and the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Methods: Sixty male C57BL/6J mice (aged 4 wk) were randomly assigned into 6 groups and fed vitamin D-deficient (VDD; 0 IU/kg) or vitamin D-normal diet (VDN; 1000 IU cholecalciferol/kg) and administered placebo or LF (100 or 1000 mg/kg body weight) by gavage for 24 wk. Trabecular bone structure was analyzed using micro-CT, and VDR expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. In vitro, MC3T3-E1 cells were treated with 100 μg LF/mL to evaluate its effect on VDR expression. Finally, the direct recruitment of LF to the Vdr promoter was confirmed by chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. In addition, cells were transfected with pGL3-basic Vdr vector for monitoring Vdr promoter activation using luciferase assays.

Results: LF supplementation at 100 and 1000 mg/kg revealed an ∼6.5% (P < 0.05) increase in bone mineral density in mice on VDD diet and exhibited an enhanced expression of VDR in bone compared with control. This increased expression of VDR was also observed in the bone of mice on the VDN diet, but the effect was more pronounced in VDD diet. In vitro, compared with the control group, Vdr mRNA expression was 18 times greater (P < 0.05) and peaked at 2 h posttreatment of LF. By cotransfection of the pGL3-basic Vdr vector, LF induced luciferase activity by 30% (P < 0.05) in MC3T3-E1 cells.

Conclusions: In vivo and in vitro, LF, a potential activator of VDR, promotes osteogenesis. This suggests that dairy products, which are rich in LF, may serve as a functional food to improve bone health.

Bile Acids Elevated in Chronic Periaortitis Could Activate Farnesoid-X-Receptor to Suppress IL-6 Production by Macrophages.

Chronic periaortitis (CP) is a rare autoimmune disease without effective treatment. By analyzing the serum bile acid spectrum in 28 CP patients with the ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, we found that the bile acids were significantly altered in CP patients, with significant increases in chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and glycochenodeoxycholic acid (GCDCA) and decrease in deoxycholic acid (DCA). Signaling pathway enrichment analysis from the RNA sequencing results suggested that the altered gene sets in PBMC of CP patients were associated with bile acid metabolism. Furthermore, we found that pathological concentration of CDCA could significantly inhibited IL-6 expression in RAW 264.7 cells after LPS stimulation. Since CDCA is a well-known natural high-affinity ligand for the bile acid receptor farnesoid-x-receptor (FXR) while GW4064 is the synthetic specific agonist of this receptor, we then revealed that GW4064 significantly decreased IL-6 expression in RAW 264.7 cells and bone marrow-derived macrophages but not in FXR macrophages upon LPS stimulation. The western blot results with the anti-FXR antibody showed significantly increased expression in the nuclear proportion, suggesting that FXR agonist promoted the transportation of FXR into the nucleus but did not increase the FXR expression in macrophages. Dual-luciferase report assay and ChIP assay demonstrated that upon activation, FXR could directly bind to the promoter site of IL-6, leading to the decreased expression of IL-6. Thus, bile acids, especially CDCA, may operate to damp inflammation FXR-mediated downregulation of IL-6 in mononuclear cells and provide a protective mechanism for CP patients.

Nanostructure Transformation as a Signature of Oxygen Redox in Li-Rich 3d and 4d Cathodes.

Lithium-rich nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LRNMC) is being explored as an alternative to stoichiometric nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) cathode materials due to its higher, initially accessible, energy-storage capacity. This higher capacity has been associated with reversible O oxidation; however, the mechanism through which the change in O chemistry is accommodated by the surrounding cathode structure remains incomplete, making it challenging to design strategies to mitigate poor electrode performance resulting from extended cycling. Focusing on LRNMC cathodes, we identify nanoscale domains of lower electron density within the cathode as a structural consequence of O oxidation using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and operando X-ray diffraction (XRD). A feature observed in the small angle scattering region suggests the formation of nanopores, which first appears during O oxidation, and is partially reversible. This feature is not present in traditional cathode materials, including stoichiometric NMC and lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) but appears to be common to other Li-rich systems tested here, LiRuO and LiNbMnO.

Gut Microbial Composition and Diversity in Four Ophiuroid Species: Divergence Between Suspension Feeder and Scavenger and Their Symbiotic Microbes.

Gut microbiota have important roles in the survival and adaptation of the host. Ophiuroids, as the worldwide dominant benthos, have ecological roles in benthic-pelagic coupling in the sea floor. However, little is known about the composition and diversity of their gut microbiota and its potential functions in benthic ecosystems. In present study, we preformed 16S rRNA sequencing and function analysis in four dominant species (, , , and ) with two feeding types (suspension feeding/herbivores and scavenger/carnivores) from the Yellow Sea, China. Results showed that 56 phyla and 569 genera of microbiota were identified among ophiuroid guts. Multivariate and diversity analyses showed that the ophiuroid gut microbiota were independent and have higher biodiversity to the sediment microbial in the Yellow Sea. Phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Tenericutes, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant bacteria, with more than 80% abundance among the four ophiuroid species. A comparison among the gut microbial compositions among four ophiuroids showed the similarity of two offshore carnivore ophiuroids ( and ) and variation in the dominant microbiota types of three nearshore ophiuroids (, , and ). The functional analysis revealed the significant differences of the environment-related expression in gut microbiota between nearshore and offshore environments. The Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) functional annotation showed the significant divergence of metabolism pathways between two nearshore species, the herbivores and carnivores , such as the Lipid metabolism, Carbohydrate metabolism, and Metabolism of cofactors and vitamins. The homolog search and phylogenetic analysis identified the first gut symbiotic Hepatoplasma in with important roles for the nutrient metabolisms. Overall, our study reported the comprehensive data of ophiuroid gut microbiota, while the functional microbiome provides insight into the physiology and environmental adaptation in ophiuroids.

Prescreening and treatment of aortic dissection through an analysis of infinite-dimension data.

Background: Aortic dissection (AD) is one of the most catastrophic aortic diseases associated with a high mortality rate. In contrast to the advances in most cardiovascular diseases, both the incidence and in-hospital mortality rate of AD have experienced deviant increases over the past 20 years, highlighting the need for fresh prospects on the prescreening and in-hospital treatment strategies.

Methods: Through two cross-sectional studies, we adopt image recognition techniques to identify pre-disease aortic morphology for prior diagnoses; assuming that AD has occurred, we employ functional data analysis to determine the optimal timing for BP and HR interventions to offer the highest possible survival rate.

Results: Compared with the healthy control group, the aortic centerline is significantly more slumped for the AD group. Further, controlling patients' blood pressure and heart rate according to the likelihood of adverse events can offer the highest possible survival probability.

Conclusions: The degree of slumpness is introduced to depict aortic morphological changes comprehensively. The morphology-based prediction model is associated with an improvement in the predictive accuracy of the prescreening of AD. The dynamic model reveals that blood pressure and heart rate variations have a strong predictive power for adverse events, confirming this model's ability to improve AD management.

The Influence of Social Determinants of Health on Emergency Departments Visits in a Medicaid Sample.

Study Objective: We evaluate the relationship between social determinants of health and emergency department (ED) visits in the Medicaid Cohort of the District of Columbia.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of 8,943 adult Medicaid beneficiaries who completed a social determinants of health survey at study enrollment. We merged the social determinants of health data with participants' Medicaid claims data for up to 24 months before enrollment. Using latent class analysis, we grouped our participants into 4 distinct social risk classes based on similar responses to the social determinants of health questions. We classified ED visits as primary care treatable or ED care needed, using the Minnesota algorithm. We calculated the adjusted log relative primary care treatable and ED care needed visit rates among the social risk classes by using generalized linear mixed-effects models.

Results: The majority (71%) of the 49,111 ED visits made by the 8,943 participants were ED care needed. The adjusted log relative rate of both primary care treatable and ED care needed visit rates increased with each higher (worse) social risk class compared with the lowest class. Participants in the highest social risk class (ie, unemployed and many social risks) had a log relative primary care treatable and ED care needed rate of 39% (range 28% to 50%) and 29% (range 21% to 38%), respectively, adjusted for age, sex, and illness severity.

Conclusion: There is a strong relationship between social determinants of health and ED utilization in this Medicaid sample that is worth investigating in other Medicaid samples and patient populations.

Degradable Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Based Supramolecular Plastics with High Mechanical Strength in a Watery Environment.

It is challenging to fabricate degradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based plastics that can be used in watery environments because PVA is soluble in water. In this study, PVA-based supramolecular plastics with excellent degradability in soil and high mechanical strength in watery environments are fabricated by the complexation of vanillin-grafted PVA (VPVA), hydrophobic humic acid (HA), and Fe ions (hereafter denoted as VPVA-HA-Fe complexes). Large-area PVA-based plastics can be easily prepared from a solution of VPVA-HA-Fe complexes using a blade-coating method. The high-density of hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions, as well as the reinforcement of self-assembled Fe -chelated HA nanoparticles, facilitate the fabrication of PVA-based plastics with a breaking strength of ≈85.0 MPa. After immersion in water at room temperature for 7 d, the PVA-based plastics exhibit a breaking strength of ≈26.2 MPa, which is similar to that of polyethylene in its dry state. Furthermore, owing to the reversibility of the hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions, the VPVA-HA-Fe plastics are recyclable and can be conveniently processed into plastic products with desired shapes. After being placed under soil for ≈108 d, the PVA-based plastics are completely degraded into nontoxic species without requiring manual interference.

A stable cathode-solid electrolyte composite for high-voltage, long-cycle-life solid-state sodium-ion batteries.

Rechargeable solid-state sodium-ion batteries (SSSBs) hold great promise for safer and more energy-dense energy storage. However, the poor electrochemical stability between current sulfide-based solid electrolytes and high-voltage oxide cathodes has limited their long-term cycling performance and practicality. Here, we report the discovery of the ion conductor NaYZrCl (NYZC) that is both electrochemically stable (up to 3.8 V vs. Na/Na) and chemically compatible with oxide cathodes. Its high ionic conductivity of 6.6 × 10 S cm at ambient temperature, several orders of magnitude higher than oxide coatings, is attributed to abundant Na vacancies and cooperative MCl rotation, resulting in an extremely low interfacial impedance. A SSSB comprising a NaCrO + NYZC composite cathode, NaPS electrolyte, and Na-Sn anode exhibits an exceptional first-cycle Coulombic efficiency of 97.1% at room temperature and can cycle over 1000 cycles with 89.3% capacity retention at 40 °C. These findings highlight the immense potential of halides for SSSB applications.

Bidirectional relationships between weight stigma and pediatric obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This study for the first time quantified concurrent and bidirectional relationships between weight stigma and weight status in children, with age and gender as moderators. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycINFO for studies examined associations between weight stigma and weight status among children aged 6-18 years. Twenty-five studies (20 cross-sectional studies and five longitudinal studies) from six countries with 101,036 participants were included in review, and 18 were included in meta-analysis. Weight and height were self-reported in nine studies, otherwise objectively measured. With data from 17 cross-sectional studies and baseline portions of four longitudinal studies, meta-analysis showed weight stigma and overweight/obesity were associated (pooled OR = 3.12, 95% CI: 2.71, 3.60), they were also associated across age and gender. Body mass index (BMI) was associated with greater weight stigma (pooled r = 0.38, 95% CI: 0.32, 0.43). Age modified such association. Weight stigma predicted increased BMI from three longitudinal studies (pooled β = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.78, 1.45); another two longitudinal studies reported BMI predicted greater weight stigma. Data were inadequate for age- or gender-stratified analyses. Findings supported positive concurrent and bidirectional relationships between weight stigma and weight status. Timely obesity and weight stigma interventions to protect children well-being are needed.

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Medication Adherence: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Background: Medication adherence (MA) is critical to successful chronic disease management. It is not clear how social determinants of health (SDH) impact MA. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the evidence on the relationship between SDH and MA.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature using a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) format. A literature search was performed using three databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Clinical Trials Register in December of 2018. Included studies were completed in the USA, included adults aged 18 years and older, measured at least one social determinant of health, and medication adherence was the primary outcome measure. Data from included full texts were independently extracted using a standardized data extraction form. We then conducted a meta-analysis and pooled the odds ratios from the included studies for each social determinant as well as for all SDH factors collectively.

Results: A total of 3137 unduplicated abstracts were identified from our database searches. A total of 173 were selected for full text review after evaluating the abstract. A total of 29 articles were included for this systematic review. Economic-related SDH factors and MA were mostly commonly examined. The meta-analysis revealed a significant relationship between food insecurity (aOR = 0.56; 95% CI 0.42-0.7), housing instability (aOR = 0.64; 95% CI 0.44-0.93), and social determinants overall (aOR = 0.75; 95% CI 0.65-0.88) and medication adherence.

Discussion: Food insecurity and housing instability most consistently impacted medication adherence. Although included studies were heterogenous and varied widely in SDH and MA measurements, adverse social determinants overall were significantly associated with lower MA. The relationship between SDH and MA warrants more attention and research by health care providers and policymakers.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Preserving the Functionality of Plasmonic Nanosensors.

Preserving the functionality of nanosensors is critical for their reliable performance under harsh environmental conditions. Biofunctionalized plasmonic nanostructures are an important class of bionanoconjugates for biosensing, bioimaging, and nanotherapeutics. Plasmonic nanostructures and biomolecules exhibit poor thermal stability over time. Here, we report a class of metal-organic framework, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), as a protective coating for preserving plasmonic nanostructures and plasmonic bionanoconjugates at elevated temperature. Gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) with sharp tips are attractive plasmonic nanotransducers with high sensitivity but are prone to structural change and loss of sensitivity. This work reports the first observation that ZIF-8 can preserve the structure of AuNBPs and their corresponding strong electromagnetic field enhancement and high refractive index sensitivity. In addition, ZIF-8 coating enables nearly 100% retention of biorecognition capability of antibodies immobilized on the AuNBP surface after exposure to 60 °C for 48 h. The efficacy, versatility, and facile implementation of ZIF-8 coating offer great promise for the preservation of nanosensors.

Time trends in comorbidity and management of hypertension and self-reported diabetes: A 15-year nationwide longitudinal study in China.

Objectives: To examine time trends in comorbidity of hypertension and self-reported type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and their diagnosis, treatment, and management in China during 2000-2015 and study factors associated with these outcomes.

Methods: Longitudinal data collected from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) during 2000-2015 were analyzed. 143, 351 and 338 had both hypertension and self-reported T2DM were selected in 2000, 2011 and 2015, respectively. Average systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and hypertension prevalence among T2DM participants, and treatment and control of hypertension and self-reported T2DM among participants with both conditions were examined for all and by sex and weight status. Poisson regression model assessed the associations.

Results: From 2000 to 2015, among participants with self-reported T2DM, hypertension prevalence dropped from 88.4% to 83.0% and BPs decreased (P < 0.05). Men and overweight/obese participants had greater decreases in hypertension prevalence and DBP, while women had a larger decrease in SBP than men. Over time, among participants with both hypertension and self-reported T2DM, rates of hypertension treatment (45.3% to 57.7%), hypertension control (3.0% to 10.9%) and self-reported T2DM treatment (90.0% to 95.6%) increased (all P < 0.001). Older, women, ever-smoking, heavier drinking, better income level, higher education level, and obesity had higher rates of prevalence, treatment, and control of hypertension, and self-reported T2DM treatment among participants with both hypertension and self-reported T2DM.

Conclusions: Rates of hypertension treatment and control among participants with both hypertension and self-reported T2DM have improved in recent years, but were still low.

Could Irradiation Introduce Oxidized Oxygen Signals in Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering of Battery Electrodes?

The characterization of oxidized oxygen states through high-efficiency mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (mRIXS) has become a crucial approach for studying the oxygen redox activities in high-energy battery cathodes. However, this approach has been recently challenged due to the concern of irradiation damage. Here we revisited a typical Li-rich electrode, LiNiMnCoO, in both lithiated and delithiated states and evaluated the X-ray irradiation effect in the lengthy mRIXS experiments. Our results show that irradiation cannot introduce any oxidized oxygen feature, and the features of oxidized oxygen are weakened with a high X-ray dose. The results confirm again that mRIXS detects the intrinsic oxidized oxygen state in battery electrodes. However, the distinct irradiation effects in different systems imply that irradiation could selectively target the least stable elemental or chemical states, which should be analyzed with caution in the study of active chemical states.

Structure of a laminarin-type β-(1→3)-glucan from brown algae Sargassum henslowianum and its potential on regulating gut microbiota.

A homogeneous polysaccharide named SHNP with apparent molecular weight of 8.4 kDa was purified from brown algae Sargassum henslowianum using ethanol precipitation, ion-exchange chromatography, and gel-filtration column chromatography. Structural analyses reveal that SHNP is completely composed of glucose, and its backbone consists of β-D-(1→3)-Glcp with side chains comprising t-β-D-Glcp attached at the O-6 position. Thus, SHNP is a laminarin-type polysaccharide. In vitro fermentation test results showed that SHNP was digested by gut microbiota; the pH value in the fecal culture of SHNP was significantly decreased; and total short-chain fatty acids, acetic, propionic and n-butyric acids were significantly increased. Furthermore, SHNP regulated the intestinal microbiota composition by stimulating the growth of species belonging to Enterobacteriaceae while depleting Haemophilus parainfluenzae and Gemmiger formicilis. Taken together, these results indicate that SHNP has the potential for regulating gut microbiota, but its specific role in the regulation requires to be further investigated.

Hypoxia-induced myeloid derived growth factor promotes hepatocellular carcinoma progression through remodeling tumor microenvironment.

Exploring and studying the novel target of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been extremely important for its treatment. The principal objective of this project is to investigate whether myeloid derived growth factor (MYDGF) could accelerate the progression of HCC, and how it works. Cell proliferation, clonal formation, sphere formation and xenograft tumor experiments were used to prove the critical role of MYDGF in HCC progression. Tumor angiogenesis, immune cell infiltration, macrophage chemotaxis and inflammatory cytokines detection were utilized to clarify how MYDGF remodeled the tumor microenvironment (TME) to accelerate the progress of HCC. Here, we reported a secretory protein MYDGF, which could be induced by hypoxia, was significantly upregulated in HCC and associated with poor clinical outcomes. Using bioinformatics and experimental approaches, we found that MYDGF promotes cell proliferation and through a mechanism that might involve enhanced self-renewal of liver CSCs. Furthermore, MYDGF can also promote tumor angiogenesis, induce macrophages to chemotaxis into tumor tissue, and then release various inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6 and TNF-α, which ultimately aggravate inflammation of tumor microenvironment and accelerate HCC progression. We provided evidence that MYDGF could directly affect the self-renewal of liver CSCs, and indirectly aggravate the inflammatory microenvironment to accelerate the progression of HCC.

High quality and fast compressed sensing MRI reconstruction via edge-enhanced dual discriminator generative adversarial network.

Generative adversarial networks (GAN) are widely used for fast compressed sensing magnetic resonance imaging (CSMRI) reconstruction. However, most existing methods are difficult to make an effective trade-off between abstract global high-level features and edge features. It easily causes problems, such as significant remaining aliasing artifacts and clearly over-smoothed reconstruction details. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel edge-enhanced dual discriminator generative adversarial network architecture called EDDGAN for CSMRI reconstruction with high quality. In this model, we extract effective edge features by fusing edge information from different depths. Then, leveraging the relationship between abstract global high-level features and edge features, a three-player game is introduced to control the hallucination of details and stabilize the training process. The resulting EDDGAN can offer more focus on edge restoration and de-aliasing. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our method consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods and obtains reconstructed images with rich edge details. In addition, our method also shows remarkable generalization, and its time consumption for each 256 × 256 image reconstruction is approximately 8.39 ms.

Investigation of myocardial protection during pediatric CPB: Practical experience in 100 Chinese hospitals.

Many measures have been proposed for myocardial protection in pediatric congenital heart surgeries, but little data is available for China. This study investigates myocardial protection strategies in pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) throughout China. Online questionnaires were delivered to 100 hospitals in 27 provinces. The number of yearly on-pump pediatric cardiovascular surgeries in these hospitals varied greatly. About 91.0% of respondents believe that each surgery should have at least two perfusionists, while only 64.0% of hospitals actually met this requirement. For pediatric patients, crystalloid cardioplegia was more prevalent than blood-based cardioplegia. Histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate solution and St. Thomas crystalloid solution were dominant among crystalloid cardioplegia. Del Nido cardioplegia and St. Thomas blood-based cardioplegia ranked the top two in the popularity of blood-based cardioplegia. Dosages varied among different kinds of cardioplegia. In the choice of different cardioplegia, perfusionists mainly focused on myocardial protective effect and cost. Hypothermia of cardioplegia solution was maintained by ice buckets in 3/4 of the hospitals in this survey. In conclusion, the essence of myocardial protection management during pediatric CPB was cardiac arrest induced by cardioplegia under systemic hypothermia. However, there is no uniform standard for the type of cardioplegia, or dosages. Therefore, well-designed multicenter randomized controlled trials are warranted to provide tangible evidence for myocardial protection of cardioplegia in pediatric CPB.

[A modified gentamicin protection assay for detecting invasive phenotype of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis].

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) is one of the most important zoonotic pathogens that cause enteritis and systemic infection in animals and human. Understanding invasive capacities of SE isolates is of vital importance to elucidate pathogenesis of Salmonella infection. To improve the throughput capacity and repeatability of classical gentamicin protection assay (GPA), a modified PGA was developed by taking high-throughput advantage of 96-well cell plates and multichannel pipettes. In addition, drop plate technique rather than spread plate method was applied in the modified GPA protocol for bacterial enumeration. The modified GPA protocol was evaluated by phenotyping intracellular replication of a high virulent and a low virulent SE isolates, JL228 and LN248, in a phagocytic cell line RAW264.7. The protocol was then applied in invasive phenotype determination of 16 SE strains to non-phagocytes (HT-29) and the intracellular replication of 43 SE strains to phagocytes (RAW264.7). Significant lower intra-group and inter-group coefficient of variations of the modified GPA was observed, implying good repeatability and reproducibility over traditional protocol. Further, replication phenotypes were also correlated with those from direct observation by confocal microscopy. Collectively, the improved GPA protocol had advantages of high throughput capacity, good repeatability and reliability, it was also noticed that the protocol also represented a fast and labor-saving alternative scheme for the invasive phenotype determination of Salmonella Enteritidis, and providing reliable phenotype profiles for Salmonella-host interplay interpretation.

Improving Stem Cell Clinical Trial Design and Conduct: Development of a Quality Assessment Tool for Stem Cell Clinical Trials.

Background: Clinical trials are at the cornerstone of evidence-based stem cell therapies, but the quality assessment for designing and conduct these sometimes-complex studies are scarce of evidence. This study is aimed at developing a handy quality assessment tool for stem cell clinical trials, enhancing capacity of the self-regulate overall quality, and participating protection.

Methods: The framework of quality assessment tool was based on the PQRS (progress-quality-regulation-scientific) quality assessment tool, and detailed quality indicators were developed by leader group discussion, expert consulting, and literature review. Stem cell clinical trials were retrieved from the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, and corresponding quality indicators were assessed and extracted. The validity and feasibility of conceptual quality assessment tool were further evaluated by using structural equation modeling.

Results: The quality assessment tool for stem cell clinical trials contains four critical quality attributes, including participant protection, scientific value, quality control, and stem cell products, and 9 observed quality indicators. From 11 primary clinical trial registries in the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, 9410 stem cell trial registrations were identified, and 1036 studies were eligible for publications and protocols screening. After reviewed full text, 37 studies were included in the validity and feasibility evaluation: 32 studies were completed, and 3 studies terminated early. Most of the studies (83.79%) were in the early phase, and 63.16% of the studies were investigator-initiated trial. To further tested for validity, the critical quality attributes and quality indicators (QIs) between expertise further validated by the SEM method, which showed a good fit for the model (chi - square = 26.008; = 0.353; TLI = 0.967; CFI = 0.978; RMSEA = 0.048). Compared with exploratory trials, evaluating using the quality assessment tool, confirmatory trials performed similarly in participant protection, scientific value, and quality control, but lower in stem cell products.

Conclusions: The results of critical quality attributes and quality indicators between expertise and confirmatory validation analysis are basically consistent, indicating the feasibility and validity of applying this quality assessment tool for overall quality evaluation of stem cell trials.
