Introduction

Thomas Proft received a MSc degree in Biology and a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, before starting his postdoctoral studies at the University of Auckland in 1995. He is currently Associate Professor in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in the Department of Molecular Medicine & Pathology, School of Medical Sciences at the University of Auckland. In 2004, he was recipient of a Sir Charles Hercus Research fellowship from the Health Research Council (HRC) and the Invitrogen™ Life Sciences Young Investigator Award. He is an associate investigator with the Maurice Wilkins Centre since 2003.
Thomas Proft’s research interests are virulence factors produced by the human pathogenic bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes, or Group A Streptococcus. He began research on streptococcal superantigens in the late 1990’s and more recently focuses on the molecular mechanisms of streptococcal pili and other cell wall-anchored virulence proteins. His lab is currently developing a pilus-based vaccine against GAS.
