MBA (HR), MSc, PhD+Post Doc (Metabolic Research)

Introduction

I am working as a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Pediatrics and Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Disorders (PMSD) at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India. I have being working in the field of non communicable diseases including obesity, diabetes, sleep apnea, muscle mass, vitamin D deficiency and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) since 14 years. During this period, I have established Sleep Laboratory, Molecular and Biochemistry laboratories and standardized all techniques used in modern day research.

My academic dedication can be judged from my publications as I have already published 37 full papers and more than 35 abstracts in international and national journals with good impact factors. Few more publications from my work are under review or in press. I have also presented my research work in different international (USA, Germany, Spain, Bangkok, Srilanka, and Nepal) and national conferences. Further, I am dealing with more than 7 research projects as a co-principal investigator. I got best Sleep Day activity award from World Sleep Congress, Prague, Czech Republic 2017; Young Scientist Project award from Department of Science and Technology, Government of India as a Principal Investigator in July 2014; Young Investigator award from 6th World Congress on Sleep Medicine in Seoul, Korea in 2015; Best Paper award from International Conference on Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Bangkok, Thailand, 2013 and individual fellowship award from the Indian Council of Medical Research, Government of India, New Deli, India in 2006.

For the first time in India, we have analysed polymorphisms of pro-inflammatory cytokine genes (Bhatt et al, 2019) and systemic inflammation (Bhatt et al, 2019) for OSA and NAFLD, vitamin D deficiency in prediabetes (Bhatt et al, 2018), obesity (Bhatt et al, 2014) and fatty liver (Bhatt et al, 2012), new index for prediction of fatty liver (Bhatt et al, 2015), novel gene (Myostatin, Bhatt et al, 2014) for muscle mass and body fat, and multiple genes for fatty liver (Bhatt et al, 2017, and obesity (Bhatt et al, 2012, review) in Indians. Our most recent data, focused on genetic and hormonal determination of sleep apnea in children showed that children with OSA have increased obesity, insulin resistance and systemic inflammation.

Another contribution of my work is conducting a large-scale intensive Health Education Awareness Programs and Medical Camps among children, parents and public on the health impact of obesity, malnutrition, sedentary lifestyle and air pollution across 100 schools/colleges and more than 100 residential associations in urban and rural areas, Delhi and NCR, India, and participated more than 20,000 students, their parents and teachers. The Health Education Awareness Programs has been given through lectures, workshops, group discussions, leaflets/booklets and audio video media. I also initiated health education program and medical camps focusing on women in the age 20-60 years, targeted for proper nutrition and lifestyle advice and early detection of bone disorders, pre-diabetes and diabetes. This program included about 2000 women from urban and rural areas. They were made aware through lectures, workshops, group discussions, leaflets/booklets and audio, video media on dietary vitamin D intake and sun exposure.
