An Introduction to Orthodontics (5th Edition)

ISBN: 9780198808664

Textbook published by Oxford University Press

The 5thedition of Introduction to Orthodontics provides a welcome update to this best-selling textbook. The specialty of Orthodontics is one of the fasting growing in dentistry and this book provides an evidence-based contemporary overview of all aspects of orthodontics.

The book begins with a useful background to orthodontics, including chapters on the rationale for treatment, aetiology and classification of malocclusion, managing the development of the dentition and the biological basis of craniofacial growth and tooth movement. Chapters on orthodontic assessment, cephalometrics and treatment planning lead onto chapters on the diagnosis and treatment of specific types of malocclusions and anomalies. The reader is then lead through chapters on different types of orthodontic appliances, including fixed appliances, functional appliances and a brand-new chapter on clear aligners. Chapters are dedicated to the important concepts of anchorage, adult orthodontics and retention, and also interdisciplinary treatments such as orthognathic surgery, hypodontia and cleft care. A useful chapter on orthodontic first aid is also provided.

Gaining expertise in any subject requires sound foundations on which to build on, and this introduction to orthodontics provides these foundations for anyone involved in orthodontic clinical care, whether they are new to orthodontics, or wanting an evidence-based update.
