Psychosocial and behavioral problems of children and adolescents in the early stage of reopening schools after the COVID-19 pandemic: a national cross-sectional study in China.

This study aims to explore the psychosocial and behavioral problems of children and adolescents in the early stage of reopening schools. In this national cross-sectional study, a total of 11072 students from China were naturally divided into two groups based on their schooling status: reopened schools (RS) and home schooling (HS) group. The psychosocial and behavioral functioning were measured by Achenbach Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) and compared in these two groups. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the independent predictors associated with the psychosocial and behavioral problems. Our results showed that the students in the RS group had more adverse behaviors than that of HS group. The RS group had the higher rates of parent-offspring conflict, prolonged homework time, increased sedentary time and sleep problems (all p < 0.001). When separate analyses were conducted in boys and girls, the RS group had the higher scores for (1) overall behavioral problems (p = 0.02 and p = 0.01), internalizing (p = 0.02 and p = 0.02) and externalizing (p = 0.02 and p = 0.004) behaviors in the 6-11 age group; (2) externalizing (p = 0.049 and p = 0.006) behaviors in the 12-16 age group. Multivariable regression showed parent-offspring conflict and increased sedentary time were the most common risk factors, while physical activity and number of close friends were protective factors for behavior problems in RS students (p < 0.01 or 0.05). The present study revealed that students' psychosocial and behavioral problems increased in the early stage of schools reopened unexpectedly. These findings suggest that close attention must be paid and holistic strategies employed in the school reopening process of post-COVID-19 period.

Declining Levels of Specialized Synaptic Surface Proteins in nNOS-Expressing Interneurons in Mice Treated Prenatally with Valproic Acid.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, and repetitive or restricted interests and behaviors. Membrane proteins are a significant part of the proteins in cell and play key functions in synaptic transmission. We have recently shown that neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) expression was reduced in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) of mice following postnatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure. In the current study, we utilized a label-free proteomics approach to identify and quantify surface protein expression in nNOS-positive interneurons between VPA-treated and control mice. Western blot was used to confirm the expression of selected membrane proteins. Our proteomics data revealed differentially expressed surface proteins in nNOS interneurons, e.g. Narp, AMPA-type glutamate (AMPA) receptor subunit GluA4 and Protein kinase C gamma (PKCγ), which were validated by Western blotting in mice treated with VPA. This work will pave the way for further elucidation of the mechanisms of these differentially membrane proteins in nNOS interneurons-medicated ASD.

Long-term neurodevelopment outcomes of hand, foot and mouth disease inpatients infected with EV-A71 or CV-A16, a retrospective cohort study.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease in western Asia area and the full range of the long-term sequelae of HFMD remains poorly described. We conducted a retrospective hospital-based cohort study of HFMD patients with central nervous system (CNS) complications caused by EV-A71 or CV-A16 between 2010 and 2016. Patients were classified into three groups, including CNS only, autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation, and cardiorespiratory failure. Neurologic examination, neurodevelopmental assessments, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and lung function, were performed at follow up. Of the 176 patients followed up, 24 suffered CNS only, 133 ANS dysregulation, and 19 cardiorespiratory failure. Median follow-up period was 4.3 years (range [1.4-8.3]). The rate of neurological abnormalities was 25% (43 of 171) at discharge and 10% (17 of 171) at follow-up. The rates of poor outcome were significantly different between the three groups of complications in motor (28%, 38%, 71%) domain (p=0.020), but not for cognitive (20%, 24%, 35%), language (25%, 36%, 41%) and adaptive (24%, 16%, 26%) domains ( = 0.537,  = 0.551,  = 0.403). For children with ventilated during hospitalization, 41% patients (14 of 34) had an obstructive ventilatory defect, and one patient with scoliosis had mixed ventilatory dysfunction. Persistent abnormalities on brain MRI were 0% (0 of 7), 9% (2 of 23) and 57% (4 of 7) in CNS, ANS and cardiorespiratory failure group separately. Patients with HFMD may have abnormalities in neurological, motor, language, cognition, adaptive behaviour and respiratory function. Long-term follow-up programmes for children's neurodevelopmental and respiratory function may be warranted.

[Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG improves symptoms and its mechnism in mice with ovalbumin-induced food allergy].

Objective To investigate the effect of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) on peripheral blood IL-4/IFN-γ in mice with ovalbumin-induced food allergy. Methods The mice with food allergy were divided into 3 groups (n=10 in each group): food allergy model group, low-dose LGG group (1×10 CFU/mL, 200 μL/d) and high-dose LGG group (1×10 CFU/mL, 200 μL/d). The healthy mice (n=10) served as a control group. Mice in the LGG groups were given LGG for consecutive 22 days after modeling. The control mice and the food allergy model mice were given normal saline instead of LGG. At day 23, the allergic score, body mass, thymus index, spleen index were recorded and calculated; the expressions of IgE, IL-4 and IFN-γ in peripheral blood were detected by ELISA; the pathological changes of small intestines were observed by HE staining and fecal flora were examined by bacterial culture. Results The thymus and spleen indexes had no significant differences within the 4 groups. Compared with the control group, IL-4, allergic score, E.coli and bacteroides increased, and IFN-γ, IFN-γ/IL-4, IgE, body mass, Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus decreased in the mice with food allergy. Compared with the mice with food allergy, IL-4, allergic score, E.coli and Bacteroides decreased significantly, and IFN-γ, IFN-γ/IL-4, IgE, body mass, Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus significantly increased in the LGG groups in a dose-dependent manner. In the food allergy model group, some edematous and necrotic epithelial cells were found in intestinal mucosa. Compared with the food allergy model group, the intestinal mucosa was integrated and the intestinal cells appeared ordered in the LGG groups. Conclusion LGG can remarkably improve the symptoms of ovalbumin-induced food allergy probably by decreasing IL-4/IFN-γ ratio.
