Introduction

Peter Windsor (Harper until 2000) is Professor Emeritus at The University of Sydney (USYD), and formerly Professor of Livestock Health and Production in the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Camden campus, Autralia. Raised on sheep-wheat-beef farms near Wagga, NSW, Peter graduated as a veterinarian from USYD in 1977, completed pathology residencies at Cornell University NY and San Diego Zoo CA in 1980-2, a PhD on ruminant neuropathology in 1988 and a DVSc in 2007, both from USYD. Peter has specialist veterinary registration in pathobiology, is a Diplomate of the European College of Small Ruminant Health Management, has supervised >18 PhD & numerous other graduate students and published >200 peer-reviewed scientific journal publications. His diverse research on food and fibre security and sustainability, includes: ruminant health & productivity of smallholder farming communities in developing countries, FMD control (assisted successful FMD eradication in the Philippines); control of paratuberculosis (leading to Australian registration of Gudair vaccine) & CLA; pain management for improved livestock husbandry welfare (leading to registration of Tri-Solfen), & the patho-epidemiology of developmental losses during gestation (including first Australian isolation of Neospora caninum). His studies of congenital disorders discovered numerous ruminant inborn errors of metabolism, leading to new animal models of human disease (eg biliary atresia) and their elimination from livestock populations for improved farm animal welfare. Peter was awarded medals of appreciation by governments of the Democratric Republic of Laos and the Kingdom of Cambodia, plus the 2011 Kestevan Medal by the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists for significant contributions to international veterinary science.
