Introduction

I became a perioperative nurse as a new graduate. The OR was a very intimidating environment for a young nurse, and even though I was often over- whelmed, I knew I was home. For various reasons throughout my 20+ year career, I have left the OR to explore other endeavors in nursing, but I have always returned to my love of surgery.
I published my first article in the AORN Journal. That was a turning point in my career. What was once a “bucket list” accomplishment led to several more articles, a column, and an Editorial Board appointment. I feel very fortunate that through my writing and nursing experiences, I have made many professional connections and friends, as well as gained continued knowledge of the multifaceted discipline of perioperative nursing.
