Marc Cheylan

Introduction

Marc Cheylan is a Maître de conférences at the École Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE), an institute within the PSL Research University (Paris Sciences et Lettres). After a post as the associate curator at the Natural History Museum of Aix-en-Provence, in 1982 he joined the EPHE’s biogeography and ecology research laboratory based at the University of Montpellier. He currently works at the Centre for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology (CEFE) at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS: www.cefe.cnrs.fr/fr/) where he teaches conservation biology. He holds a double doctorate: his first thesis (Montpellier University, 1981) was a study of the biology and ecology of the Hermann’s tortoise, the second (EPHE, 1995) was a study of the biogeography and conservation of reptiles in the Mediterranean basin. Marc Cheylan is the author of some 200 publications and four books in the field of ecology, biogeography and the conservation of amphibians and reptiles around the Mediterranean (https://scholar.google.fr/citations?hl=fr&user=iQu5bacAAAAJ&view_op=list_works&cstart=20). He is a member of several nature conservation organisations, including the International Union for Conservation (IUCN), and also participates in scientific advisory bodies for natural parks and reserves. His research focus is the ecology of reptiles and amphibians with a view to species conservation.
