Health risk assessment by toxic metals in little egrets () and food chain contaminations.

This study analysed heavy metals from little egret (). Egret's Eggs, egg shells, food (fish and insects), blood, meat samples (thigh, liver, and chest), water, soil and sediments samples were collected from the two selected sites of the study area. Samples were analysed on flame atomic absorption spectrometer after acid digestion. Detected metals were found almost inline of concentrations when compared with the both sites. Among detected metals Mn was found higher in concentration (µg/g) i.e. 18.509 followed by Zn i.e. 9.383, Ni, Cu, Pb and Cd. Sediment exhibited higher levels (µg/g) of metals (25.061) followed by the meat (19.044) egrets food (18.825), excreta (16.26), blood serums (4.577), eggs (3.626) and water samples (2.432).The level of metals in sediments of the study are showed environmental concerns. Health risks were also investigated that were compared to guidelines of WHO and FAO threshold limits. It was found a marginal health risk to life through detected metals. This study revealed that little egret are good bio-indicator for the screening and investigation of contaminates presence in the environment.

The role of gut microbiota in clinical complications, disease severity, and treatment response in severe alcoholic hepatitis.

Background: Dysbiotic gut bacteria engage in the development and progression of severe alcoholic hepatitis (SAH). We aimed to characterize bacterial communities associated with clinical events (CE), identify significant bacteria linked to CE, and define bacterial relationships associated with specific CE and outcomes at baseline and after treatment in SAH.

Methods: We performed 16-s rRNA sequencing on stool samples (n=38) collected at admission and the last follow-up within 90 days in SAH patients (n=26; 12 corticosteroids; 14 granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, [G-CSF]). Validated pipelines were used to plot bacterial communities, profile functional metabolism, and identify significant taxa and functional metabolites. Conet/NetworkX® was utilized to identify significant non-random patterns of bacterial co-presence and mutual exclusion for clinical events.

Results: All the patients were males with median discriminant function (DF) 64, Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) 12, and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score 25.5. At admission, 27%, 42%, and 58% had acute kidney injury (AKI), hepatic encephalopathy (HE), and infections respectively; 38.5% died at end of follow-up. Specific bacterial families were associated with HE, sepsis, disease severity, and death. Lachnobacterium and Catenibacterium were associated with HE, and Pediococcus with death after steroid treatment. Change from Enterococcus (promotes AH) to Barnesiella (inhibits E. faecium) was significant after G-CSF. Phenylpropanoid-biosynthesis (innate-immunity) and glycerophospholipid-metabolism (cellular-integrity) pathways in those without infections and the death, respectively, were upregulated. Mutual interactions between Enterococcus cecorum, Acinetobacter schindleri, and Mitsuokella correlated with admission AKI.

Conclusions: Specific gut microbiota, their interactions, and metabolites are associated with complications of SAH and treatment outcomes. Microbiota-based precision medicine as adjuvant treatment may be a new therapeutic area.

Efficient removal of plastic additives by sunlight active titanium dioxide decorated Cd-Mg ferrite nanocomposite: Green synthesis, kinetics and photoactivity.

Large use of flame retardants or additives in plastic industries have caused scientific attention as their leaching from consumer products is indicative of environmental concern. Moreover, plastic additives have proven features of endocrine disruptors, genotoxicity and persistence. Therefore, photodegradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and bisphenol A (BPA) were explored in water. Seeing environmental safety, titanium dioxide decorated magnesium substituted cadmium ferrite ([email protected]) was synthesized by using plant extract of M. koenigii via co-precipitation. Sharp peaks obtained in PXRD ensured high crystallinity and purity of distorted spherical nanocomposite (5-25 nm). Subsequently, [email protected] nanocatalyst was evaluated for the effective elimination of plastic additives at variable reaction parameters (pollutant: 2-10 mgL; catalyst: 5-25 mg; pH: 3-7, dark-sunlight). With 20 mg of catalytic dose, [email protected] showed maximum degradation of 2 mgL of TBBPA (91%) and BPA (94%) at neutral pH under sunlight. Considerable reduction in persistence of TBBPA (t:2.4 h) and BPA (t:2.1 h) indicated admirable photoactivity of [email protected] Results were supported by BET, zeta potential, band reflectance and photoluminescence analysis that indicated for higher surface area (90 mg), larger particle stability (-20 mV), lower band gap (1.9 eV) and inhibited charge-pairs recombination in nanocomposite. Degradation consisted of initial Langmuir-adsorption followed by first order kinetics. Scavenger analysis revealed the role of hydroxyl radical in photodegradation studies. Nanocomposite was effective up to eight cycles without any significant loss of activity that advocated its high-sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Overall, with excellent surface characteristics, green synthesized [email protected] nanocomposite is a promising and alternative photocatalyst for industrial applications.

Molecular epidemiology of norovirus variants detected in children under five years of age in Hyderabad, India.

Purpose: Noroviruses are common viral agents in acute diarrhea in all age groups worldwide. Norovirus has been classified into 10 genogroups, GI to GX with over 48 genotypes among them the GII.4 genotype has evolved over time with a clear pattern of periodic variant replacement. Immunity is strain or genotype specific with little or no protection conferred across genogroups. The present study was aimed to determine the epidemiology, prevalent genotypes of norovirus in children below five years of age in the Hyderabad region, India.

Methods: The stool samples and clinical data were collected from 458 children below 5 years of age comprising of cases with acute gastroenteritis (n ​= ​366) and a control group (n ​= ​92) admitted to the pediatric ward. All the samples were tested for Norovirus by ELISA and RT-PCR. Sequencing was done for predominant strains.

Results: 10.3% (n ​= ​38) of cases and 3.2% (n ​= ​3) of the control group were found to be Norovirus positive. Predominant genotypes were GII-82.5% followed by GI-12.5%.

Conclusion: Sequencing and Phylogenetic analyses of 20 GII.4 strains was done. All of the isolates are clustered away from published the GII.4 variants thus suggesting the appearance of a new variant.

Characterization of gliadin, secalin and hordein fractions using analytical techniques.

Prolamins, alcohol soluble storage proteins of the Triticeae tribe of Gramineae family, are known as gliadin, secalin and hordein in wheat, rye and barley respectively. Prolamins were extracted from fifteen cultivars using DuPont protocol to study their physiochemical, morphological and structural characteristics. SDS-PAGE of prolamins showed well resolved low molecular weight proteins with significant amount of albumin and globulin as cross-contaminant. The β-sheet (32.72-37.41%) and β-turn (30.36-37.91%) were found higher in gliadins, while α-helix (20.32-28.95%) and random coil (9.05-10.28%) in hordeins. The high colloidal stability as depicted by zeta-potential was observed in gliadins (23.5-27.0 mV) followed secalins (11.2-16.6 mV) and hordeins (4.1-7.8 mV). Surface morphology by SEM illustrated the globular particle arrangement in gliadins, sheet like arrangement in secalins and stacked flaky particle arrangement in hordeins fraction. TEM studies showed that secalin and hordein fractions were globular in shape while gliadins in addition to globular structure also possessed rod-shaped particle arrangement. XRD pattern of prolamin fractions showed the ordered crystalline domain at 2θ values of 44.1°, 37.8° and 10.4°. The extracted prolamins fractions showed amorphous as well as crystalline structures as revealed by XRD and TEM analysis. Space saving hexagonal molecular symmetry was also observed in TEM molecular arrangement of prolamins which has profound application in development of plant-based polymers and fibres.
