Introduction

Prof. Kusal K.Das (b.1962) a PhD from University of Calcutta is the Professor of
Physiology at Shri B. M. Patil Medical College, BLDE University, Bijapur,
Karnataka, India . He is also a Visiting Professor (2014-2016) at Leeds Institute of
Cardiovascular & Metabolic Medicine, University of Leeds, UK. Professor Das
has made significant contribution to understanding of experimentally induced
hypoxia & cell signaling mechanism during heavy metal induced stress and
alteration of vascular integrity using animal as well as human models. His
researches showed the link between the divalent heavy metals (Pb and Ni) and
oxygen sensing mechanisms through hypoxia-inducible factor-1? (HIF-1?) that
regulate sympathetic overdrives and ROS generation (Das and Saha 2014).
Currently he is working on the HIF-1 ? dependent responses to hypoxia along with
calcium channel blockers and vitamin C supplementation in vascular responses to
ischemia that are associated with aging, diabetes and other cardiovascular and
cerebrovascular disorders (Das KK et al 2015, Das KK et al 2016). Further,
contribution of Professor Das in developing a method for estimating blood
vitamin E levels is noteworthy. Equally important is the standardization of a
‘stroke model’ in rodents to understand strokes and treatment of patients. He is
among the first in the world to establish the link between arsenic toxicities and
gold mining activities which made a significant impact on Government policy on
environmental issues. His researches thus range from experimental physiology to
clinical medicine. His works are cited in WHO references, EPA-USA,
International Union of Pure & Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) etc.
Prof.Das is actively involved in ethical issues in medical sciences especially
publication ethics. He is an associate member (life time) of Committee on
Publication Ethics (COPE) since 2012, UK and was International Advisory Group
member of COPE (2013 – 2014). He is the first Indian medical journal editor to
be awarded “COPE International Scholarships” (2012) to work on bioethics at
UCL, London. He is also the recipient of “The Physiological Society - UK
Endowment Scholarship” (2011) to do Fellowship at University of Edinburgh,
Scotland.
Prof.Das has received several awards including “Prof. Shakuntala Dasgupta
Memorial Oration Award” of PSI (2003), “Prof. S. R. Maitra Memorial Oration
Award “ of PSI (2010), “Dr. C. R. Krishnamurthy Memorial Oration Award” by
University of Madras (2012), “Best Researcher Award” of BLDE University
(2014), “Sri Dev Raj Bajaj Research Prize” of APPI (2014), “Shri S.N.Chaudaty
Memorial Award” by Association of Physiologists of India (2016).
For his immense contribution in the field of science education, Ministry of Science
& Technology, Government of Karnataka jointly with I.I.Sc, Bangalore conferred
him “Dr.Raja Ramanna State Scientist Award” in 2015 and Zubieta University,
La Paz, Bolivia conferred him ‘Science, Honor and Truth Medal” in October
10th 2016.
He is the Vice President of The Physiological Society of India and Member of
Education Committee of International Union of Physiological Sciences, IUPS
(2015-2017).
