Introduction

Jorge Hallak M.D., Ph.D., is Full- Professor of Medicine at the University of Sao Paulo Medical School, Coordinator Men’s Health Study Group at the Institute for Advanced Studies- University of Sao Paulo; Head, Section of Andrology – Division of Urology and Coordinator, Reproductive Toxicology Unit at The University of Sao Paulo Medical School and Medical and Scientific Director, Androscience – Science and Innovation Center and High-Complexity Clinical and Research Andrology Laboratory in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
He is an active urologist, specialized in andrology, male infertility, human reproduction, microsurgery and sperm cryopreservation. Obtained his Ph.D. degree in reproductive biology involving basic research in the andrology laboratory, particularly biochemical aspects of sperm biochemistry, physiology and cryobiology at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, USA from 1996 to 1998, as well as clinical andrology training in male infertility and microsurgery with Dr Anthony J., Thomas Jr. Dr. Hallak has obtained his doctorate degree at The University of São Paulo Medical School in 1999 and has published over 100 scientific papers and book chapters in peer reviewed international journals, as well as over 400 international meeting presentations and holds over a dozen national and international prizes and awards with his students. Founder and Director of Androscience - Science and Innovation Center in Andrology. A High-Complexity Clinical and Research Andrology Laboratory, dedicated to provide cutting-edge high-quality services in male infertility and hypogonadism evaluation and treatment as well as develop and conduct clinical and basic science studies in the field. Active member of several professional societies, including: American Urological Association (AUA), American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), American Society of Andrology (ASA), Society for the Study of Male Reproduction and Urology (SSMRU), Sociétè Internationale d‘ Urologie (SIU), International Society of Andrology (ISA), Brazilian Urological Association (SBU).
In 2018, obtained the Title of Full-Professor at The University of Sao Paulo Medical School, with the study: Effects of continuous use of marijuana and cigarette smoking in testicular function and its relationship with hypogonadism and male infertility. Areas of scientific interest include: sperm and testicular tissue cryopreservation in patients with cancer and other medical conditions, pathophysiology and microsurgical treatment of obstructive and non-obstructive azoospermia (vasectomy reversals, testicular microdissection) and varicocele. Biochemical aspects related to oxidative stress, sperm function and dysfunction; reproductive toxicology, influence of habits, lifestyle factors and chronic diseases in hypogonadism and male fertility and genetics of male infertility. In reproductive toxicology, has identified risk factors by studying the effects of air pollution, environmental xenobiotics, psychotropic drugs (marijuana, crack, antidepressants), alcohol and tobacco in human health and fertility.
One of the main concerns of Prof. Hallak in the last twenty-years, has been with the paradox between medical and scientific information and relevant discoveries in his areas of interest and the reliable information without misguided conflicts of interest produced by groups with strictly economical purposes that indeed reaches the lean public. For our “changemakers” goals to be effective, information must reach the final destination. “Popularization of science” has been a top concern in the agenda, in special for the abusive uncontrolled and unnecessary application of assisted reproductive technologies as a consequence of the lack of diagnosis for the infertile male with lifelong consequences to the mother, the offspring and future generations; excessive unnecessary testosterone therapies and steroids abuse and the importance of fertility preservation in cancer patients before radiation or chemotherapy, the use of clinical biomarkers of men’s health, to mention a few. The “innovation ecosystem” must make the comprehension of the role scenario from “bench to bedside” understandable for the public, in order that transformative scientific information effectively reaches who is going to benefit from it. This equation is unbalanced and needs much more effort from the scientific community, government and any organization being in private or public sector, basically a call for the entire civil society.
In 2018 Prof. Hallak has been appointed as Coordinator of Men's Health Study Group at The Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Sao Paulo (IEA-USP), pioneering the foundation of this group within the most prestigious and emerging university-based think-thank in Brazil and Latin America, that has the full capacity of becoming an important vector and transforming agent for our changemaking proposals.
Areas of Medical Practice: Andrology, Urology, Male Infertility, Microsurgery, Hypogonadism
Areas of Basic Science Interest: Cryopreservation, Sperm Function, Oxidative Stress, Lipid Peroxidation, DNA damage, Mitochondria.
