John D. Heiss, M.D. is the Chair of the Surgical Neurology Branch and Director of the Neurological Surgery Residency Training Program in the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Heiss received B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Michigan and completed neurosurgery residency training at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He is Vice-Chair of the Combined Neurosciences Institutional Review Board at the National Institutes of Health. He is board certified in neurological surgery and principal investigator of clinical studies of the 1) natural history and 2) genetics of Chiari I malformation and syringomyelia, 3) gene therapy for Parkinson's disease, and 4) Resiniferatoxin (RTX) for cancer pain.
